I had a LOT of people tell me that it was nuts to get a dog in my early 20’s, but today I get to celebrate quite possibly the best decision of my life, Arthur, on his two-year “gotcha” day.

For those of you who don’t know, I get yearly photos taken of Arthur and I with @shandandyourdogs to get a snapshot into how our relationship grows, and how we as individuals grow. To say he is my soul dog is an understatement, and to have an animal so connected to me is something incredibly special that I will never be able to put into words properly.

He is the start of my very long life filled with dogs, and I’m quite certain I will never have another dog quite like him, and I know I will search for him everywhere once he is gone (in a very very long time from now).

He is also the greatest teacher to so many of my client dogs with @douglasdogcare - having a dog that is willing to work with owners and their dogs through behavioural problems is invaluable. He has changed countless canine and human lives for the better, and I wouldn’t be able to do what I do without him.

I don’t know what I would do without this hooligan of a dog and am so grateful for every moment I get to spend with him. Many, many more adventures are coming his way.

And that’s the end of this very sappy post :)

I didn’t get a dog for him to be a couch potato…

Endlessly grateful for my little pocket rocket of a sports dog!

Canine friendships like this are SO crucial for your dog to be properly socialized, but not in the way you might think…

Socialization doesn’t mean letting your dog to play with every single dog and bringing them to the dog park daily so that they have a million “friends.” These types of social interactions create overly-friendly and pushy dogs, which often creates reactive dogs too.

Instead, socialization means allowing your dog to create mutual bonds with a select number of well-mannered and well-trained dogs who you know and trust. I would so much rather my dog have one or two close, mutual friends rather than roughhouse and romp with every dog they meet.

Arthur & Billie are a perfect example of this - they co-exist in a neutral way, but then can chase and roughhouse like no other, but they listen to each other’s body language and can return to neutral in a split second. They give each other confidence, fulfillment, and teach each other great habits (like recall, neutrality, etc.).

So take this as a reminder, your dog doesn’t need more friends, they need more close and trusting canine connections!

Yes, you read that right…Arthur is 4% Pomeranian…

The first three breeds were no surprising since he has such strong herding instincts and retrieval genetics, but we were totally speechless to find out a few of these breed mixes 🙈

When your aussie shepherd mix thinks he’s a husky, you support him on his howling journey wholeheartedly 🙈

I know everyone says this, but time really has flown by. Arthur really was the sweetest puppy who quickly brought a whole lot of chaos into our lives...the puppy fever is real now 🙈

Safe to say he’s a big fan of dog sports, especially ones where he gets to chase plastic bags on a string 🙈

We are officially entering our “sporting training era” for the colder months and start agility classes this week, and we have some of our final sporting trials throughout October. I’m sad that trial season is ending, but am SO excited to try and train in some new sports!

Since everyone loved part one and two, of course I have to share the final batch of photos I have from Arthur’s two year session with @shandandyourdogs!

These photos were taken at one of our favourite adventure locations in Vancouver and are even more special because of where it was shot ♥️

Arthur is what we might call a “selective water dog” - any outdoor body of water, he is the biggest fan, but the second water is in the bath, expect a very depressed dog and teeny protest whimpers the entire time…

To say September has been a month of change would be an understatement, and I have never been more appreciative of my dog.

For those of you who don’t know, my partner (Arthur’s dad) moved to Ontario to attend his dream school program, so I have been keeping myself extremely busy as long-distance sucks! But, that’s also meant that Arthur and I road-tripped to Alberta, competed in dock diving (and gained a new title), did a million hikes, started canicross running and did so much more.

Very thankful that Arthur keeps up with me and gives me that extra motivation to get moving ♥️

Is your dog a velcro dog or an explorer? 🤭

Kai literally will not go more than a few feet away from me, even if I tell him to go explore, but Arthur is so confident and curious, he doesn’t mind going further away by himself! It’s so cute to see the difference in personalities!
