Overlooked Train Stops 🗺️
📍Limburg (an der Lahn)

Went here for a work event in April and assumed it would be a boring rural town. A blow through stop on the Cologne-Frankfurt route, surrounded by hills...

...but you know what? Its pretty to look at, accessible, and affordable. Are you going to take a 2 week summer holiday here? No, probably not. Is it an underrated stop for part of a larger trip, like a camping & trains Euro trip? Yes!

Trains around the Lake at the Centre of the Alps

In good weather, the Bodensee is hard to beat. Surrounded by bike trails and railways, crisscrossed by ferries, with connections into Austria, Switzerland, and Germany

The train here is at Klaus in Vorarlberg station, btw :) while the onboard view shows the train heading around from Lindau to Bregenz

How I got to take local trains for free! 👀

I'm sharing more photos from Lindau and Bavaria (yes, I know Ulm isn't in Bavaria, but it was all part of the same trip)

For flight free travellers, the Deutschlandticket isn't the only way to make the most of Germany's local trains - even if your destination isn't in Germany, it's central location in Europe means you often have to use these links anyway!

When I stayed by the Bodensee, I automatically got a tourist card included with my accommodation (even camping with a tent). In exchange for paying tourist tax, you get free transport around the area, including trains up into the Bavarian countryside

You'll find similar deals in other parts of German speaking Europe like Salzburg and Trentino (i think Ticino has one too) - keep an eye out for these deals!

LINDAU/BODENSEE CAMPING TRIP BY TRAIN
✍️ List/tips below

Lake Constance borders Austria, Switzerland, and Germany, and is so central in Europe that you can approach it from many angles by train

I got here by night train to Munich, then just 1 change into an EC headed for Zürich. Top tip - when Swiss trains aren't in Switzerland, they can actually be cheap!

I went in late April, and the weather was already summery. Only the water was so cold that nobody dared go in (and I've swam in Alpine lakes before).

Lindau is surrounded by beautiful water, and I stayed in the waterside campsite nearby. You can walk into town, or take the bus, and the bakery around the corner opens early - recommend it for breakfast!

Campsite - @park_camping_lindau
Meal - Gasthof Zum Zecker
Beer - @lindauer.inselbrau
Bakery - @derbrotrebell (Bäckerei Schwarz)

Train connections from nearby Lindau Reutin are good, including round to Bregenz in Austria and beyond.

Flight free travellers have lots of options for getting to this area by long distance train, such as Railjets to/from Feldkirch, Swiss connections from Zurich, or the slow but effective train connections from Munich 👍

The new Nightjet mini cabins - my first time taking one earlier this year, as far as Munich. As you can see, I arrived late enough to miss a nearly 1hr connection in the morning, so that put a damper on my day...

But the train itself? I was a fan - been looking forward to this for a while!

Best bits - the window, and ofc the privacy
Worst bits - not much padding on the "bed"

Overall I think these work really well - hope Luna and others can improve and iterate on this stuff in the future. Definitely addresses many concerns which will stop people from using night trains, especially elderly or women travelling alone.

Now if DB could stop these things getting so massively delayed all the time, we'd really be in business!

HOORN 🇳🇱

I'm firmly of the opinion that Amsterdam is great, but its also far from the best way to see old fashioned Dutch canals/architecture/towns

Most are wise to Haarlem being very close to the Dutch capital, and its Bavokerk is definitely worth seeing - but Alkmaar is a better town for getting a glimpse of old canals

What Hoorn does is take that old style of the Dutch "Golden Age" and put that on the seafront. The old town is a tiny nucleus within sprawling suburbs, but even on a cold but sunny April day, it was beautiful to look at

It's very windy up by the North Sea here, and the town could do with being much less proud of its historic role in birthing the VOC, but does it look good? 100%

Very easy to reach by IC train 👍

NANTES, RENNES, PARIS 🚊🚇🚄

In April, I travelled flight free to Rennes and back. I used the trams in Nantes, using this team/train interchange at Haluchere-Batignolles and a TGV...

Rennes has beautiful Wisteria, but more importantly, a great new metro with well integrated stations

Stopped by some churches and graves in Paris: Notre Dame, St Sulpice, Samuel Beckett, Oscar Wilde...

We enjoyed happy hour, and also the parks of Luxembourg and Buttes-Chaumont, which also offers views of Montmartre and is well linked by metro!

LILLE, WAMBRECHIES, & TRAINS BETWEEN BELGIUM/FRANCE 🇧🇪🇫🇷

Back on 1st April (get your Poisson d'Avrils ready, Francophones), I travelled via Maastricht to Lille and Wambrechies. The latter is a town along a large canal, once independent and now swallowed by the Lille conurbation/agglomération

Changing multiple times, the price was pretty good (€18 from Maastricht) but it did take quite a while. Most notably, the cross border train from Tournoi to Lille Flandres was slower and delayed

That said, Lille is a lovely city! I always thought northern France was the country's most boring corner, essentially Southern England with menus in French, but thankfully its much better than that!

Lille has a metro - a light metro similar to Rennes, but older in a way which means the cars are even smaller. It works, and there are some trams, but the team frequency seems very poor... 🚇

Big bonus, however, the buses are some of the best I've seen in France. Frequent, easy to understand, and well integrated with the metro 👍

Wambrechies has a lovely canalside, with a beautiful mairie and bakery with local chocolates (Le Palet d'Or), and the architecture in the centre of Lille is amazing! Some great bike lanes being put in, and an impressive town hall which is surprisingly modern and reflects the style of Ghent, not far away in Flanders...

The TGV connections must be unparalleled for a city caught between Britain, France, and Benelux. Local cross border services, and local stuff across Northern France, plus (when you include Lille Europe) TGVs all over France

An incredibly useful spot for flight free travellers on NW Europe - ideal for changing trains and taking a break ❤️

Amsterdam -> Newcastle 🇳🇱🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿⛴️
Flight free with @dfdsnederland
Late January - €132 for two people
(double bed cabin, not incl. bus transfers)

The waves were no issue when lying down in the cabin, which was very comfy! Shops onboard were bigger than Stena Line ferries, with ok cafes/bars

Very relaxing, good deal - except the bus transfers are expensive, and peak season sees fares soar!

Surprised how un-freezing it was on deck in the morning! But the #FogOnTheTyne was no joke

Food and drink from @pinklanecoffeecollective , @pablo.eggsgobao , & @ouseburnfarmnewcastle

St Andrews graveyard, the Swing Bridge... Before heading to Durham for the castle/cathedral
