Day 5 of #weekwithoutdriving involved my straightforward and routine commute to Harrisburg for session weeks: the 47 bus to the El to 30th Street Station to Harrisburg via Amtrak—and back. (I switched to the Broad Street Line on the return trip for a shorter wait between transfers, if a slightly longer walk home.) On the train, I worked, read, and called my parents to wish them a happy anniversary. The train times are not always ideal, but vastly preferable to driving from Philly. by @transit4allpa

Day 3 of “week without driving” started with walking my kids to Saturday soccer games at @palumboreccenter. (We’ve been proud to work with @repbwaxman to secure $530k to refurbish their fields). #weekwithoutdrivingpa

I headed to the Broad Street Line to make the first leg of a trip to Malvern.

I was trying to get to 30th Street Station—but the El was running ~20 mins behind 😬.

So I quickly checked the @transit.app, and made a decision to go to Suburban Station…

…and got the Trenton line!

30th Street is and will forever be the best train station in the northeast (don’t @ me about Grand Central). I caught the Amtrak to Paoli. BUT: from Paoli, a car has to pick me up to cover what was literally a “last mile” so I could get to my ultimate destination…

…where I joined supporters for an event supporting the extraordinary musicians of @thephillypops. (We’ve been proud to secure $325k over the last three years to support their work.)

I took regional rail back to Jefferson Station, and ran to catch a timely 45 bus at 12th and Market to 12th and Pine…

…where I met my wife at @kiddorestaurant (we had a babysitter).

We walked to the Philadelphia Film Center and saw the final @phillyfilmsociety “Surprise 35” screening of the year—which (surprise!) was actually the first movie ever shown by PFS on new **70mm cameras** acquired this year: the still wild and relentlessly inventive “Boogie Nights” (1997) from Paul Thomas Anderson.

The movie started 45 minutes late (technical difficulties with the new cameras!). Very late to relieve the babysitter, we—I confess—took a taxi that we hailed on the street to get back in a reasonable amount of time. by @transit4allpa

I just signed the Week Without Driving pledge. Starting today through October 8, I’m walking, biking, using transit—and, when none of these are possible, carpooling—to travel around the region for work and with my family. Some 30% of Pennsylvanians don’t drive, whether because of their age, a disability, their income, or another factor. Here in Philly, one in four households doesn’t have a car.

Week Without Driving invites us to reimagine mobility across our country, in rural and urban areas, and everywhere in between.

I challenge my colleagues in the Pennsylvania General Assembly to join me in taking the pledge, taking transit, and taking initiative to craft legislation that ensures our constituents can get where they need to go and back home safely.

You can sign the pledge at weekwithoutdrivingpa.org.

@repbwaxman, @rep_fiedler, are you in? ✊🏾 taken in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by @transit4allpa

“Like many mothers in Philadelphia, I have relied on public transit as our main form of transportation. Over the past decade I have relied on public transit to get myself to work, and my children to their various activities including school and doctor’s appointments, and use transit to shop for our family’s needs. My husband and I own a car which he mainly uses to commute over 20 miles every day to work in NE Philadelphia. His job location lacks frequent and reliable public transportation access, especially to accommodate his work schedules which require non-traditional 9-5 hours. As the parent with more flexible job hours, I’ve always been in charge of getting our kids to daycare and then school.

Getting a second car is not doable for us or our family for several reasons but especially financially. Living in a city the cost of car ownership and storage is just a burden we cannot take on.”

Philadelphians like Dena and her family deserve better transit options. Organizations like @transit4philly are working to make that happen, and you can help them.
