Since 2019, the number of approved foster carers has decreased by 12%.

Meanwhile, the number of children coming into care has increased.

Yes, we need more foster carers.

No, that’s not enough.

For children with trauma, the focus is often on what happened.

What we miss is what didn’t happen.

The safe, secure, predictable relationships that weren’t there.

The good news is… when we see what was missing, we can start to provide it.

If trauma is relational, healing can be relational. ❤️‍🩹

Child trauma is complex. So let’s keep things simple.

This is the model at the heart of everything we do at Trauma Space.

1️⃣ “Am I OK?”

Our children are powered by a nervous system that’s just trying to keep them alive.

Because of what’s happened to them, their system can detect danger where there is none, or look for safety in dangerous places.

Much of what gets labelled “bad behaviour” is SURVIVAL behaviour for our kids.

2️⃣ “Are We OK?”

So let’s work to help them feel safe, as often as possible.

The easiest way to do that? Through safe, loving, predictable relationships.

A therapeutic approach is all about protecting the safety and stability of that relationship.

3️⃣ “Is Here OK?”

The missing piece is environment.

What external triggers are there? What signs of safety can we provide?

What do you think?

We would love to hear your thoughts. 🤔🧡

Can we be honest? The behaviour apps aren’t working.

They aren’t working for teachers.
They aren’t working for parents.
They CERTAINLY aren’t working for children with trauma.

Are behaviour apps working for you?

Today, I’m launching something new 🆕✨🎉

Almost a decade of fostering, professional training, and therapeutic work has brought me to this point.

Trauma Space (@traumaspace) is a collection of courses and community for anyone supporting children who’ve experienced early-life trauma — parents, carers, school staff, social workers, and the organisations working with families who are often at breaking point.

My first course is live now: The Problem with Behaviour Apps — and with the return to school this week, the timing feels right (link in bio 👆).

More courses, community, and options for organisations are on the way. by @traumaspace
