Urban Farmer 👨🏾‍🌾🐔🦆🌾🌱☘♻️.
79 countries and counting 🌎
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Urban farming ain’t just dirt under your nails and boots in the mud. It is strategy, science, culture, business, leadership, and legacy.

It is early mornings and long days, but it is also problem solving, building systems, feeding communities, and creating pathways that most people never even realize exist. This work teaches you how to grow food, yes, but also how to grow discipline, patience, and vision.

Urban farmers do not look like what people expect. Some days it is sweats and a bandana. Some days it is gym shorts and a tee. Some days it is a full suit. Because this is not just a job. It is a movement. It is who we are now.

Urban farming will take you places, literally. Different countries, different cities, different climates, different cultures, different growing environments. You meet people who think differently, grow differently, live differently, and it expands you in ways you cannot even explain. This is about purpose and access. About reclaiming knowledge and creating opportunity where it did not exist before.

And if nothing else, I can grow my own food, build something from nothing, and adapt in any environment. So yeah, whether it is the conference, field, or the zombie apocalypse, I am good either way.

As we approach October 1st, today marked the end of our heavy summer harvest and the real transition into fall planting.
Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been transitioning our Baltimore and Washington, D.C. beds, and today I got to do it alongside some of our Emerging Farmers, harvesting the last of some beautiful produce, turning beds, amending the soil, adding compost, and reflecting on what we’ve grown.

One comment stuck with me today: “I’ve never seen vegetables grow as big as they do right here.”

And we do it without chemicals or commercial fertilizers. What feeds our soil is largely what we create ourselves, the food we eat, the compost we make, and what our animals leave behind.

Summer treated us well. Now it’s time to see what fall can grow. 🍂🌱 by @travis_farms

SUMMER HARVEST: ROUND 3!

We have officially finished our third round of summer harvesting as we prepare our farm for fall crops! Our Emerging Farmers have been hard at work, and the harvest continues to be plentiful!

This round, we harvested:

🥬 Purple and green tatsoi

🥬 Butterhead lettuce and green Salanova lettuce

🥬 Fresh spinach

🥬 Swiss chard

🌿 Fresh cilantro and basil

🥒 Cucumbers and zucchini

🍅 Tomatoes

🌶️ Fresh peppers

🎃 Pumpkins

🍉 Watermelon

And we're not done yet! We still have zucchini, pumpkins, watermelon, green peppers, and sugar snap peas growing. We're hoping to collect those during our final round of summer harvesting!

📸 Pictured is Kam, one of our newer Emerging Farmers! You can't tell from the photo, but everything we harvested was carefully bunched together and labeled. We gave some away, enjoyed some ourselves, and tomorrow we'll incorporate even more of these fresh vegetables into dishes our Emerging Farmers already know and love!

We're just grateful. Grateful for the opportunity to grow, to learn, to share, and to continue teaching our youth the importance of growing their own food. 💚

Summer harvest is wrapping up, but our growing season is far from over! by @travis_farms

September Emerging Farmer Spotlight: Olgady 🌱⚽️

My September Emerging Farmer Spotlight goes to Olgady, @_imrllyonshittzzz_ now a sophomore and in his second year as an Emerging Farmer.

I met Olgady last year as a freshman, and although I’ve always liked him, he had some transitioning and growing up to do. He was definitely one of my favorites, but he probably didn’t always feel like it because I stayed on him. I expected him to be great. I expected him to be responsible. And I was always going to show up and make sure he was doing what he was supposed to do because I knew how much potential he had.

Olgady has talents that truly set him apart. He is meticulous about his work. He doesn’t rush just to say something is finished. He takes his time and makes sure it’s done right. There are certain farm tasks I specifically call on him for because I know he’ll get them done correctly, even when it means giving up some of his own free time.

And now he’s stepping outside the farm and onto the soccer field! ⚽️ Seeing him commit himself to an organized team and shine as a soccer player has made me even prouder.

I’m looking forward to watching Olgady continue growing as a man, leader, athlete, and farmer. If you see him around, give him a shout-out. He is truly exemplifying what it means to grow. 🌱 by @travis_farms

Proud to be featured on WUSA9 highlighting the amazing work happening through our Horticulture Science and FFA program at Ron Brown College Preparatory High School!

Our students are showing that agriculture is more than growing food. It’s about leadership, science, teamwork, community, and opportunity.

We’re growing more than crops. We’re growing leaders.

Zucchini, fool!

This season, zucchini has literally been redeeming me as an urban farmer. While some crops have been cool and others have been a complete struggle, the zucchini has been nothing short of phenomenal.

I’ve had an endless supply for zucchini bread to freeze and share, zucchini fritters that I mix with salmon, tuna, and whatever else I’m feeling, and even opportunities to share my love of zucchini with the next generation.

Overall, I’m just grateful for the abundance this year. The garden doesn’t always give you what you expect, but sometimes it gives you more than enough of exactly what you need. by @travis_farms

I did not use the supersized zucchini which literally grew that big in about three days. Before that, it was probably 1/12 of that size!

I did use the other zucchini. While I'm no @cheffatbee , for the first time I made zucchini bread, which turned out perfect. Then I tried something new and made zucchini and whiting fritters, and I think those may be my new favorite too!

There’s something extra satisfying about growing your own food, bringing it home, and turning it into a meal this good. This was too perfect. by @travis_farms

While I didn’t grow up eating radishes, they have quickly become one of my most planted crops in Baltimore City. I use succession planting with them because many varieties can mature in just 25–35 days, which means you can plant new rounds throughout the growing season.

Today, I harvested some that were ready and, as usual, experimented with different recipes. I quick-pickled some of the radishes to use with tacos later this week, and I sautéed the rest using the entire plant. I sliced and sautéed the radishes with garlic for about five minutes, then chopped the stems and greens and added those for another few minutes.

I believe in zero waste, so I paired them with some cheesy shells and cornbread I had frozen (if I’m not going to eat something within 2-3 days, I automatically freeze it). I thawed both out, added my freshly harvested radishes and greens, and had a pretty good lunch!

You don’t need a huge garden to grow your own food. Every one of these radishes was grown in containers. Whatever space you have can be enough. by @travis_farms

Intern Spotlight: Nasir

I want to take a moment to spotlight @nas_thedream . He was never actually one of my students, but became part of our community as a returning intern on the Ron Brown Farm during the summers of 2025 and 2026. Although we formally ended our summer experience last Friday, Nasir joined me for lunch today, and I got to learn even more about the young man he is becoming.

Now, let me be clear, this young man is a complete GOOFBALL. The kind who can take me right to the edge of my sanity and still have me laughing five minutes later. But listening to him talk about his story, aspirations, beliefs, family, friends, and journey reminded me how much greatness exists in the world when we simply take the time to recognize it in the people around us.

This April, our worlds crossed again at the MANRRS Conference in Dallas, and I don't think he understood just how excited I was to see him there. Watching someone I knew from our farm pursuing his own path in agriculture halfway across the country was a full circle moment for me.

As Nasir returns to #FAMU for his sophomore year, I am incredibly proud of his work, convictions, commitment to his community, and focus on agriculture. Thank you for your hard work, your light, your laughter, and yes, even for trying my patience. I look forward to watching you continue to rise and become the phenomenal man I already know you're going to be! by @travis_farms
