Last night I returned to Stage AE for round 2, another fun yet wild night of metal with Mastodon.

I started out towards the front, but as the pit got more spread out I decided to head back, but not without grabbing some sick shots like this one first.

They played an absolutely incredible setlist. The last time I saw them was two years ago, when they played Leviathan in full, so this time around I go to hear more songs from their other albums, including the latest one.

John Baizley from Baroness came out to sing with Mastodon a little over halfway through the set, and he did a fantastic job singing the late Brent Hinds' vocal parts.

Hopefully Brann is able to get a new drum head for the rest of the tour.

Deafheaven was a huge surprise. I never really gave them much of a listen before the show, despite knowing that they were a very critically acclaimed band that a lot of people loved, but I got to understand why last night.

I had no idea that black metal mixed with shoegaze could have this much energy, especially from the audience.

Alcest went on first, which was another name I knew of but had not quite got around to hearing before.

Their music is very mellow, which is a little outside of my usual taste, but they performed very well, and I won't mind putting them on if I'm not in the mood for something heavy. taken in Stage AE by @travnort

Last night, I got to check another band off of my bucket list, Black Label Society.

I was absolutely blown away by how good they sounded. Obviously I knew Zakk Wylde was a great performer, but sometimes outdoor stages can be hit or miss with sound quality.

The setlist was great too. Some of their greatest hits, some newer songs, it all made for a great night.

I thought the behind-the-head guitar battle was really fun to watch.

Zakk did a wonderful tribute to Ozzy Osbourne towards the end of the set.

Before BLS, Zakk came out early with Zakk Sabbath to jam some of Black Sabbath's best songs.

Once again, my expectations for Zakk Sabbath were blown out of the water, they sounded incredible.

I'm glad they played my favorite Sabbath song, N.I.B.

Dark Chapel kicked the night off, and they were a lot of fun too.

Dark Chapel is Dario Lorina of BLS's new band, and they're a very bluesy hard rock band. I recommend giving them a listen. taken in Stage AE by @travnort

Last night was yet another night to remember full of metal at the coolest church on Earth.

Upon A Burning Body were absolutely incredible live. They brought out a ton of energy at the end of the night and played a killer setlist.

Traitors, Carcosa, Swollen Teeth, and Exocarnage (a local band from the Pittsburgh area) all opened the show and did a fantastic job at doing so. Everyone I met from those bands were also incredibly nice and were willing to help me identify songs I wasn't familiar with on the setlist (I make Spotify playlists of every show I see).

Overall, it was one of those shows that made me go "man, I love heavy metal."

Last night I saw another metal show that I can put into the category of "this matchup is a little odd, but it kind of works."

Dethklok put on one of the most interesting shows I've seen from a metal band, putting the focus almost entirely on the visuals and lights. I'm used to seeing bands with tons of focus on the band members, so seeing the opposite of that was very interesting. Musically they were spectacular though, and it was awesome seeing them play the viral Batmetal video I remember watching years ago during their set.

Amon Amarth were amazing as always. They were the only band of the night that I had seen before, so I knew they were going to put on a great show. They did change up the setlist quite a bit, adding some deeper cuts which I appreciated.

Castle Rat opened the night, and they were a lot of fun. They explained all of the characters and their lore between songs, and the fight between the Rat Queen and Rat Reaperess was fun to watch. I would definitely catch them live again if I got the chance.

Last night I celebrated Cinco de Mayo a little bit differently than what might be usual.

Behemoth put on the performance of a lifetime. This was my 4th time seeing them, and they just keep getting better. The energy was high throughout the whole show, the setlist was great and featured a bunch of songs I hadn't heard them play live yet, and overall was just a fantastic time.

Deicide were awesome too. They were one of the classic death metal bands I never got too deeply into, but they officially won me over and made me a fan with their set.

Rotting Christ converted me into a fan as well with this show. I listened to some of their studio output and it didn't initially click with me, but they are incredible live. I'll have to revisit their catalog.

Immolation did a great job opening the show. Much like Deicide, I never really listened to them when I was getting into death metal, but I'll now have to make up for lost time.

This was also my first time attending a show at the Roxian Theatre, a venue I will surely return to for future shows.

I'm not really religious at all, so if I do step inside of a church, it's because a metal band is playing there.

Orbit Culture put on an incredible performance. The song selection was top-notch, the energy from the band and the audience fed into each other, and the stage banter was quite entertaining. It was awesome to see and feel that the band was having just as much fun as we were.

Ov Sulfur were great too. They've been slowly becoming one of my favorite deathcore acts, and this show accelerated that process for me. The sound was great and the energy was quite high for them too. I also got to meet Ricky Hoover, their vocalist after their set and he was super kind.

Atlas kicked off the show, and they did a good job of getting the crowd pepared for the rest of the night. Their music is more of a moody, alt-metal style fused with modern metalcore, so I recommend checking them out if you like bands like Deftones and Loathe. They were also very nice people.

If I had a nickel for every time I saw a metal show on a holiday, I'd have at least a couple nickels, but it's interesting that it has happened a few times.

Here's the setlist from last week's show, which also happens to be the last show of 2025.

Thank you to everyone that checked the show out or followed me along, but I'm gonna hibernate for a bit, and then I'll be back before you know it.

I'll post my favorite albums and EPs of the year either closer to Christmas or on Christmas, so stay tuned for that.
