POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

A few months ago, I bought some old magazines to experiment with collage. I had no idea how things would turn out. I just let the magazines tell me what to do, and what stories they wanted to tell. And these are the results of those little experiments.

Many thanks to @deetodaayy for inspiring and introducing me to the world of collage art.

Central Highlands Needs Green

From Google Maps, one can see the extent of deforestation in Vietnam’s Central Highlands. What remains in this once-forested region are now sad brown patches of bare hills and mountains.

And when storms and heavy rains come, the forest canopies and their mighty roots are no longer there to slow down the speed and force of water and erosion. Flash floods, carrying rocks, soil, and deadly destruction, tumble downhill.

In recent days, floods have caused deaths and massive destruction in Central Vietnam. I can’t help but wonder: had our forests remained, how many homes, how many livelihoods, and how many lives would still be here today?

This poster, that I made a few years ago, is a desperate cry for reforestation.

The final drawing and a sketch from Bão (Storm), a story I'm working on.

Sometimes, the sketch contains a mystery, an energy, and rawness that is hard to replicate in the final drawing.

When drawing the city in Bão, I try not to plan too much, to go with the flow, to improvise, and to make mistakes. Maybe the process is like the way the city I live in came to be.

On weekends, I often go out with a few friends for urban sketching. Sitting on a sidewalk somewhere in Saigon, in the heat, dust, and sometimes rain, I usually work fast. Fast to capture the passing traffic, the messy infrastructure, and the energy of a developing city.

In Bão, I try to keep the same spirit. Working fast and loosely, I want to avoid overthinking, to allow space for improvisation like when I'm outside, and to let the image feel a bit more alive.

When writing the title for my current project, I realized it could capture the story's essence. To me, it was a lovely discovery.

A teacher once told me that doing figure drawing is like being in a kitchen. There, you are free to experiment. People might not see what happens, but it is a nice place to be in.
