Hello! I’m Rebecca Lee Kunz, the artist and owner of Tree of Life Studio. In 2007, when I was pregnant with my first daughter, I started my business and committed myself to my creative practice. 19 years later, through twists and turns, my life has evolved beyond my imagination. My husband and I now have three daughters, a giant labradoodle, and live under a blanket of stars in the foothills of Santa Fe. Compassion and care are the fabric of my community. I give thanks every day that I am supported in my creative path, and don’t take it for granted. I know that through isolation, we become disempowered. Indeed, our connection is our greatest weapon!

I believe that artists are leading the revolution. I believe in intentional slow living, and I believe in kindness. I believe that art is an expression of the Divine. I believe that creativity is a human impulse, and I believe it has the power to heal. I believe that there is a bottomless well of creativity that we all have access to and share. It is deep and vast and never-ending. I’ll meet you there.

“For the Indian, past history is living history. As for America, it is well that she should remember those dark years lest she allow herself to be lulled once more in to forgetfulness of the rights of her people.” – Ruth Muskrat Bronson, “Indians are People Too”
.
It is with so much joy, pride and the deepest gratitude that we present to you “Ruth Muskrat and the So-Called Indian Problem” written by @jenlorenofficial, illustrated by Rebecca Lee Kunz @treeoflife.studio, published by @levinequerido, available now wherever you buy books (link in bio). Ruth was our great great Aunt and an icon in our Cherokee family. She was a poet, an author, a civil rights activist and a leader ahead of her time, serving our people on a national platform when America told women we were second–class citizens at best. Credited with naming the historical Indian Removal “The Trail of Tears” through her poem with that title, she stood face-to-face with American president Calvin Coolidge during a speech on the White House lawn and told him what the real Indian problem was. She served as an inspiration to us and to many others who knew her over the decades she worked as an advocate for Native American tribes and our youth. Through this book there is so much to learn about Ruth, her tenacity, and the historic events that drove her to serve Indian country until the day she died.
.
Our history is indeed living today, and it is our sincere hope that this book serves to inspire the clever children who will read it… and maybe some adults too!
.
Many wados (thanks) to the following people and organizations that supported us in the creation of this book by providing information or support: Our Mother @gannjanet, cousin Jim Crouch, our great grandmother Thelma Muskrat Lee, Ruth’s grandchildren Liz Tidrick, @nori.designs, and Andrew Tidrick. Wado to Nick Thomas, Patrick Collins, @arthuralevine, @kirbylbrown2, @royboney, Daniel Heath Justice, @thecherokeenation and Cherokee National Research Center, @tracisorellauthor, @cjb.131, Emily Sylvan Kim, ncai1944, @mtholyoke YWCA, @smithsoniannmai
.
We hope you are inspired to buy our book! ~Jen and Rebecca
