🇬🇧 Synopsis - Set deep in the heart of the Brazilian Amazon, this poetic and gripping short-thriller unfolds through the voices of a chief, a teacher, and a shaman of the Borarí people. Through dramatic re-creation and exclusive archive, we are on the front line with the Borarí forest guardians in their struggle to defend their ancestral land against logging companies.

The film captures the story of the forest guardians and the creation of a powerful, indigenous-led resistance movement determined to keep the forest standing. It is both a tribute to the Borarí’s extraordinary resilience and a call for global solidarity with impact campaign by @Treesistance.

The Treesistance Forest Guardian Model

The Forest Forces crime prevention strategies and model was born during a scientific green criminology project in Brazil (2010-2016), funded by the Dutch NWO-WOTRO Science for Global Development Program. It was set up in collaboration with Brazilian universities and NGOs to identify and reduce social and environmental harm, including crime. The development strategy focused on access to justice and improving the rule of law.
In 2014, the first traditional communities that live near deforestation hotspots were equipped with waterproof GPS cameras, solar chargers and power bank. This allowed them to take pictures of illegal forest activities. In 2016, a twelve- member surveillance team from the Territory collected GPS-evidence of illegal activities within their territory which led to the removal of all illegal extractive industries…

“In Brazil’s Maró Indigenous Territory, an Indigenous surveillance team collected GPS-evidence of illegal logging activities. When GPS-referenced pictures of illegal forest activities were presented to the Environmental Inspection Agency (IBAMA), a helicopter was sent to the location of the illegal activities the same day. Eight logging concessions were cancelled and timber companies were expelled from Indigenous territory as a result of the recorded evidence. The pilot project showed that local forest protection, even in remote areas without electricity or phone networks, can be carried out by supportive communities with access to trusted law enforcement actors.”
Outtake from 2021 UN module on Forest & Fauna

This model can be replicated in other areas, especially in Indigenous and other protected areas with GPS borders.

Right now, fires are spreading across the Brazilian Amazon. Indigenous Forest Guardians are on the front line, protecting their territories with courage, local knowledge and very few resources.

Our Emergency Fire Fighting Fund gets them what they need, when they need it: equipment, fuel, monitoring technology, and support for families when rapid response is required.

Prevention is everything. A fire stopped early saves forest that would otherwise be lost for generations, and it costs many times less than fighting a blaze that has already spread. Once a fire is out of control, money can only limit the damage. Before that point, it can prevent it.

That’s why supporting now makes the biggest difference.

100% of donations go directly to the ground.

This is what defending the forest looks like right now.

In this video, @abimaelmdk Abimael Munduruku coordinator of the Takuara Forest Guardians is on the front line, fighting the fires burning through the territory with whatever tools are at hand.

A few days after this was filmed, we launched our Emergency Firefighting Fund. Thanks to everyone who has already given, we’ve been able to buy new equipment for the Guardians (which you can see Abimael purchasing at the end of the reel)

But the fires haven’t stopped. We expect them to get much worse in the coming weeks, not just in Takuara but across other territories too. The Guardians are ready to keep fighting; but they need the right gear to do it safely and effectively.

If you’re able, please consider supporting. 100% of every contribution goes directly to the ground.

'Resistance is intergenerational, and art is how its energy gets renewed’.

In the Brazilian Amazon, Indigenous peoples face political exclusion, lack of funding, land loss and the erosion of intergenerational knowledge. Treesistance is helping communities turn resistance into action. From improving access to justice to using film, storytelling and art, the organisation works alongside Indigenous communities to defend their rights, strengthen their voices and keep their knowledge alive.

Its work puts communities in control of their own stories. Through Tales of Resistance, Indigenous artist Vivi Borari records the stories of Majés and Pajés — plant healers and spiritual guides — creating space for knowledge to be shared across generations.

For Treesistance, the goal is not to extract stories from communities, but to build something they can own. Tom Wheeler, executive director, explains why art is central to Indigenous-led resistance — and how it can help renew its energy from one generation to the next.

👉 Read the full interview on CIVICUS Lens, discover the stories behind this resistance, and share them so Indigenous voices remain at the centre of the fight to protect the Amazon.

Today we’re launching the Indigenous Fire Brigades – Amazon Emergency Fund.

The Amazon is heading into its most dangerous fire season in a generation, and scientists warn it could tip into savanna at 20–25% forest loss. Around 18% is already gone. This year and next could be decisive.

A super El Niño, possibly the strongest on record, is bringing drought, and the fires have already started, much earlier than usual.

What’s worse, most of these fires are set by land grabbers clearing forest to eventually claim it. In the dry season, these fires spread fast, and once they get out of control they can destroy tens of thousands of hectares in a matter of weeks.

Indigenous Fire Brigades are the first line of defence. They patrol their territories, catch small fires early, clear dry fuel and cut firebreaks, stopping wildfires before they spread. This work is essential to protecting both the forest and all the life within it.

Help those on the frontline keep the forest standing. 100% of public donations go directly to brigades the ground. by @treesistance

A message from the forest to everyone running tomorrow 🌳🏃

Chief Dadá Borari, leader of the Maró people and Head of our Forest Guardian Programme, has a message for every runner lacing up for @earth_race_events

Every step you take tomorrow is a step for nature. The money you raise goes straight to the Forest Guardians: Indigenous communities who protect their territories in the Amazon every single day, facing down illegal logging, mining and land grabbing to keep the forest standing.

You run for a few hours. They stand guard all year. Tomorrow, we are united.

Thank you from everyone at Treesistance. 💚

Not running? Come and join us anyway! We’ll be at the rowing club in the Amsterdamse Bos (Bosbaanweg 8) with music, food, drinks and lots of great stands to check out. by @treesistance
