Helping you identify and ❤️ the 🌳 of LA, one pic at a time.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
This summer, I got to see the Trees of Europe thanks to HomeExchange! My family and I traveled for a FULL MONTH, swapping our home with people around the world! A trip where the housing alone would have cost at LEAST $12,000, we got to do for $235 thanks to this amazing website. Some people we swaped with owned their places, others were renters. And you can do it, too!

HomeExchange has given me a referral code: TREESOFLA. Use it with the link in my bio to sign up before September 30 to receive 750 GuestPoints to start. That is TRIPLE the normal amount of guest points (250) that my referral code will get you. Check out my video to see what guest points mean. TLDR: 750 is enough for a long weekend somewhere before anyone ever stays in your home.

Want to see the IRL trees featured by — @treesofstanford , @treesofcambridge , @treesofdelhi , @treesofbarcelona , Mexico City: @Arbolescdmx , San Francisco: @SFtreeguy , Seattle: @TreeswithTaha , Stockholm : @tradistockholm , London: @TheStreetTree , NYC: @Solidaritreenyc — And more? I cannot recommend Home Exchange enough.

What tree accounts am I missing? Where should I stay with HomeExchange next to see TREES?

Meet your host: Stephanie. An urban ecologist and the voice behind @treesofla, she’s spent years studying the trees that most people in LA walk past without ever noticing.

If you want to understand Los Angeles, don’t just look at the buildings. Look up. Look down. Pay attention to what’s been planted, what’s survived, and what’s about to disappear.

The trees here tell stories. A Callery pear that smells… off, for a reason. Palm trees planted for the 1932 Olympics, all aging out at the same time. Species with histories that stretch far beyond this city, now rooted into its streets.

This isn’t a nature walk. It’s a different way of reading LA. History, migration, culture all hiding in plain sight.

Book a walk with Stephanie and you’ll start to see the city differently. Not just where to go, but what’s actually there. You won’t unsee it after.

What makes any freeway entrance better? Floss silk trees. Blooming now!

These two wacky specimens will greet you as you enter the 10 West, heading north on Overland. Swipe to see the helicopter toy dangling from their branches. A geocache perhaps??

Floss silk trees (Ceiba speciosa) are native to South America and related to hibiscus. Similar flowers, right? They’re known for huge pink flowers, green photosynthetic trunks covered in wicked conical thorns, and seed pods filled with silky white fiber — the “floss” that gives them their name. Swipe to see the avocado shaped pods on these two trees and then the soft fluffy fiber popping out. It’s so buoyant, it was used in life jackets in WWII!!

These trees can grow 40–50+ feet tall I their native habitat but tolerate drought once established, and are actually well suited to big roadside spaces like this one.

In my stories I’ll post an enormous one I saw in Belize!

The golden shower tree! 🌝Yes, that IS ITS common name. Let’s all be mature. If you want, just call it
Cassia fistula. AND YES, it is related to the much more politely named gold medallion tree! (one of my faves). But golden SHOWER trees are REALLY rare in LA so I was so excited to find one in @culvercitygov . This tree earns the name from its spectacular cascades of golden-yellow flowers, which can hang nearly two feet long. Native to India and Sri Lanka, it is drought tolerant, loves heat, attracts bees and butterflies, and is the national tree of Thailand. Why don’t we have more here!? The name 😬😬 Maybe. taken in Culver City, California by @treesofla

The cajeputs (Melaleuca quinquenerva)are in bloom and being swarmed by happy bees. These are the softest trees in LA! Touch the bark and you will be amazed. I love walking or driving by these majestic paper trees laden with bright white, bottle-brush like flowers. Smell the leaves of these Australian natives and you’ll get a whiff of tea tree-like oil.  Cajeput oil, derived from the leaves, has many medicinal uses. taken in Westchester Park by @treesofla

YOU can help prevent wildfires — by planting native oaks with @treepeople_org ! Pair that with removing invasive, flammable species like black mustard (swipe to see me use their impressive weed remover!) and you’ve got yourself a plan for bringing back the native beauty and resilience to our natural lands. Thank you so much for having me at this wonderful Wilderness Restoration day @treepeople_org . I’m sorry it took me so long to post. FRIENDS! Check out the amazing work Tree People is doing to create more canopy on the streets of LA AND bring back our native vegetation. And check out their volunteer calendar (link in bio) to join a day like this! by @treesofla

Fern pine (Afrocarpus gracilior) next to @tacostamix on Venice in West LA. Ever waiting for your favorite Al pastor tacos and wonder what that tree is that’s giving you shade while you wait and salivate? It’s a fern pine! These East African native conifers are the workhorse urban trees of LA. It’s dense feathery evergreen foliage surrounds the branches in short bursts giving the effect from afar of the canopy being a green fluffy cloud. I love the peeling red rectangles of the bark. Inside the olive-like fleshy “fruits” of the female trees are actually CONES holding the seeds. These trees are compact enough not to break up sidewalks but still provide plenty of shade. They put up with massive amounts of pollution, drought, bad soil and concrete, too. Who knows, they might be shading the sidewalk at a taco truck near you!

It’s my birthday today! And my favorite tree is in bloom! The gold medallion trees!!

**Points if you can guess which audiobook I am listening to in the video 😂. It’s narrated by my favorite narrator of all time since I was a child @georgeguidall — I almost took out the sound and then was like - nah. Easter egg! Beautiful tree, beautiful literature!

Native to Brazil, these tropical legumes are part of the pea family, which means they help fix nitrogen in the soil, enriching the ground for other plants. And their flower bunches are to die for!!

Even out of bloom, you can recognize Cassia leptophylla by their long, thin, zucchini-like seed pods dangling from the branches.

They are moderately drought tolerant once established and not considered invasive here, though they may self-seed in favorable conditions. Their irregular branching habit—often sending out one or two rakish limbs at odd angles—adds to their character. Wacky characters, perfect for LA.

Walking or driving past one in full bloom is breathtaking. You’ll find them lining Lincoln Blvd in Santa Monica, around Echo Park Lake, and scattered all across the city.
