In Oaxaca, celebration belongs to everyone. 🇲🇽❤️

The streets become a gathering place where generations come together, music brings strangers closer, and traditions are carried forward not behind closed doors, but out in the open, for everyone to share.

You don’t have to be from here to join in. You simply have to be willing to celebrate alongside the people who call this place home.

And somewhere between the brass bands, the dancing, and a little mezcal offered in the street, you begin to understand that this is about more than a party. It’s about community, identity, and the joy of belonging, even if only for a moment.

This is the beauty of Oaxaca. Not just a culture to witness, but a celebration to share. 🇲🇽

One of the things we loved about Oaxaca was getting beyond the glass and seeing the land, people, and traditions behind what we were tasting.

At Mal de Amor, the experience started with the Barritour, a barrel-shaped truck with music playing, mezcal flowing, and a guide sharing stories about how this iconic spirit is made. It was fun, a little unexpected, and a pretty memorable way to learn about mezcal.

But our favorite part was getting out into the agave fields.

Standing among the plants, seeing where the journey begins, and tasting mezcal while learning about the agave made us appreciate what’s behind every sip. It’s one thing to order mezcal at a bar. It’s another to see the landscape it comes from and understand the work that goes into making it.

We also got to visit the colorful palenque, see the production process up close, and learn more about how agave becomes mezcal.

And, of course, there was plenty of time to enjoy the experience along the way. 🥃

For us, this is what travel is about: not just trying something local, but connecting with the place it comes from.

📍 Mal de Amor, Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca, Mexico 🇲🇽

📲Save this for your Oaxaca trip if you want to experience mezcal beyond the bar.

From grasshopper cocktails to mezcal, wine and a bar recognized by The World’s 50 Best Bars, Oaxaca surprised us with just how good its drinking scene is.

We came expecting incredible food, obviously. We also found some great places to sit down, order a drink and stay awhile.

🍸 Selva
This one really lived up to the hype. Selva is recognized by The World’s 50 Best Bars. We loved the moody atmosphere. The mezcal cocktails were creative and memorable.

🌅 Casa Oaxaca
The rooftop is beautiful. You get a great view of Santo Domingo. Our favorite drink was the chapulines, or grasshopper, cocktail. It was definitely one we won’t forget.

🌴 Otro Oaxaca
We went for the rooftop. The sunset was beautiful. The pool added to the atmosphere. We ended up staying longer than planned.

🌿 Amá Terraza at Casa Antonieta
This place has a very relaxed feel. We loved sitting outside surrounded by plants. The cocktails were really good. The music made it even better.

🍸 Copal
Yes, it’s a restaurant. The cocktails deserve a mention. They were outstanding. The lush atmosphere reminded us a little of Tulum.

🍷 Vino & Vinyl
This one is all about the experience. You can choose a record from their collection and actually play it. We loved sitting down with a glass of wine and letting the evening unfold.

🌄 Tierra del Sol
The terrace was our favorite part. The views are beautiful. It’s a great place to slow down and enjoy a drink.

🐟 Romeo Cevicheria
Right across from Santo Domingo. The atmosphere is casual. The cocktails are refreshing. It’s a fun place to sit outside and watch the neighborhood go by.

Oaxaca may be famous for mezcal. We found ourselves enjoying much more than mezcal tastings.

Some of our favorite Oaxaca moments were simply sitting somewhere beautiful with a good drink in front of us.

Save this for your Oaxaca trip and send it to your drinking buddy. 🍸🇲🇽

Oaxaca is one of those places that rewards you for getting a little prepared.

It’s beautiful, chaotic, incredibly walkable, and full of amazing food. Here are a few things we wish we knew:

🔊 Oaxaca City can be LOUD, so don’t choose your hotel based on location alone. Ask about the noise. There’s always a celebration — wedding, proposal, quinceañera or festival. The best part? You can often join in!

🚕 Uber isn’t really the way to get around here. Taxis are cheap and easy to find, but always agree on the price before getting in. You’ll also see mototaxis (tuk-tuks) in some areas.

📱 Save a local taxi number. They’re super responsive on WhatsApp: send your location and they’ll come pick you up. We used: +52 951 308 7251

💧 Don’t drink the tap water.
Stick to bottled or properly filtered water.

👟 This is a real city, not a beach town.
Comfortable shoes and city clothes will serve you much better than beachwear.

💵 Keep pesos with you.
Smaller restaurants, markets and street vendors may be cash only. Outside Oaxaca City, get enough cash in the city — it can be hard to find pesos in smaller towns.

🚶‍♀️ Centro is very walkable, but don’t feel like you have to walk everywhere. Taxis can save you time and energy.

🚗 Rent a car if you want to really explore. Some of the best experiences are outside the city — Monte Albán, mezcal palenques and artisan villages. A car gives you much more freedom to explore at your own pace.

🎨 Artisan communities are not just tourist attractions. For many families, pottery, textiles, alebrijes and other crafts are a real livelihood and tradition passed down through generations. Visit respectfully: you’re supporting people who make a living from their craft, not just buying a souvenir made for tourists.

🌮 Leave room between meals.
Seriously. There is always another memela, pastry, drink or market snack waiting for you.

✨ Most importantly, don’t over-plan.
Some of our favorite Oaxaca moments happened completely by accident.

Save this for your Oaxaca trip and send it to someone who needs to know 🇲🇽

In Oaxaca there’s a kind of joy here that feels contagious, and somehow, even the simplest moments turn into a celebration 🇲🇽

We love seeing a place where culture doesn’t just sit in a museum but comes to life in the streets.

Our honest take on Oaxaca restaurants: what we loved, what we’d skip. 🇲🇽

🌿 Casa Oaxaca
One of our favorite overall experiences. Beautiful views, excellent service, great cocktails and a menu that balances classic Oaxacan dishes with Indigenous ingredients and more adventurous options, including insects.

🍅 Levadura de Olla
A one-Michelin-starred restaurant that really impressed us. Laid-back, welcoming and not stuffy at all. The tomato salad is a must, but honestly, everything we tried was excellent.

🌴 Copal
We loved the atmosphere. The design reminded us a little of Tulum, but the food is what really made it memorable. And the cocktails were seriously good.

❤️ Alfonsina
One of the most special experiences of the trip. A mother-and-son team, a beautiful story, a setting we loved and food that brings tradition into a more modern experience. Their menu is prix fixe.

🌮 Ama at Casa Antonieta
A beautiful rooftop with a relaxed feel. We loved the design, atmosphere and food. That tuna taco was definitely a favorite.

🍽️ Las Quince Letras
If you want traditional Oaxacan moles, put this one on your list. A great place to experience classic Oaxacan cooking.

☀️ Tierra del Sol
Highly regarded, but it wasn’t one of our favorites. If you need to cut one restaurant from your itinerary, this would be the one we’d cut.

BUT don’t skip the building.

This is where we discovered MASEA Trigo y Maíz, which became our segue into Oaxaca’s bakery scene.

🥖 MASEA Trigo y Maíz
A bakery focused on trigo y maíz, with breads and pastries inspired by Oaxaca. If you’re at Tierra del Sol, we’d make time for it.

🥐 Bodega
Another bakery we loved. Incredible pastries, beautiful presentation and the kind of place where you want to order one of everything.

This isn’t a definitive list. It’s simply what we ate, what we loved and what we’d do differently.

📲Share this with a friend planning an Oaxaca trip, save it for your visit, and follow for more Oaxaca food, restaurants, bakeries and experiences.

We thought we knew Mexican food and drinks… then we went to Oaxaca. 🇲🇽

We’re honestly not the most adventurous eaters, so some of these were definitely outside our comfort zone. But we’re really glad we tried them.

Here are 8 things we tried for the first time:

1️⃣ Tejate 🍫
A traditional Oaxacan drink made with ingredients including cacao and the mamey seed. It has a distinctive creamy texture and is often served cold.

2️⃣ Atole 🥣
A traditional warm, masa-based drink that comes in different flavors and is enjoyed throughout Mexico.

3️⃣ Mezcal served in an agave leaf 🌵
We’ve had mezcal before, but never served this way. It was such a memorable way to experience Oaxaca’s connection to agave.

4️⃣ Ants 🐜
Yes, we actually tried them! Edible insects are part of Oaxaca’s culinary traditions, and ants can be prepared in different ways.

5️⃣ Worms 🪱
Another first for us. Definitely not something we would normally order, but we were curious enough to try them.

6️⃣ Pulque 🥛
A traditional fermented drink made from agave sap. It’s very different from mezcal because it isn’t distilled.

7️⃣ Café de Olla ☕
Traditional Mexican coffee brewed with piloncillo and spices, especially cinnamon. Warm, sweet and aromatic.

8️⃣ Chapulín cocktails 🍸🦗
Yes, grasshoppers in a cocktail! Chapulines are a beloved Oaxacan ingredient, and we definitely didn’t expect to find them in our drinks.

We may not be the most adventurous eaters, but that’s one of the things we love about traveling.

Sometimes you have to step outside your comfort zone, try something you’ve never had before, and realize you might actually like it.

Oaxaca gave us a lot of firsts, and we’re glad we said yes. 🇲🇽

❓How many of these have you tried?

We thought Oaxaca was all about food.

But this is what we found. 🇲🇽

It’s Oaxaca City coming alive with music and dancing in the streets. 💃🏽🎺
It’s standing among the ancient ruins of Monte Albán and Mitla.
It’s discovering the centuries-old tradition of mezcal making and seeing the work behind every bottle. 🌵
It’s Hierve el Agua, where the landscape looks almost unreal.
It’s waking up in a beautiful adobe house and experiencing a completely different side of Oaxaca.
It’s the traditions, the architecture, the colors and the people you meet along the way.

And yes, the food is incredible.

But after spending time here, we realized Oaxaca is so much more than what’s on your plate.

This is Oaxaca.

📲Follow along for more of our Oaxaca adventures, from the food and mezcal to the places, traditions and experiences that surprised us. 🇲🇽

Some places make you stop talking.

Hierve el Agua was one of them. 🤍

High in the mountains of Oaxaca, these ancient mineral terraces look almost unreal, like waterfalls frozen in time. But standing there, looking across the valley, what stayed with us wasn’t just how beautiful it was.

It was the feeling of being somewhere that has existed long before we arrived and will still be there long after we leave.

Travel isn’t always about checking another place off a list.

Sometimes it’s about standing somewhere beautiful, taking it all in, and realizing just how small you are in the best possible way.

Mexico, you have our attention. 🇲🇽

📲Save this one for the places that remind you why you travel. ✨

1,350 steps for THIS view. 🇲🇪

St. John’s Fortress, also known as San Giovanni, sits roughly 260 meters above Kotor Old Town, with centuries of fortifications climbing the mountain behind the city.

And here’s what makes it fascinating: this isn’t simply a fortress sitting on top of a hill. The walls themselves climb the mountain, creating a massive defensive system built and expanded over centuries.

Along the way you’ll pass the Church of Our Lady of Remedy, then keep climbing until Kotor suddenly looks tiny beneath you.

Was it a workout? Absolutely.

Was it worth it?

100%.

Save this for your Kotor trip and send it to the person you’d make climb 1,350 steps with you. 😂

After our trip, these are the experiences we genuinely think are worth doing:

🏰 Kotor Fortress
Yes, there are a LOT of steps. But the view over the Bay of Kotor is worth the climb. Go early to beat the heat.

🚠 Kotor–Lovćen Cable Car
Only about 11 minutes to the top, with incredible views along the way. From there, explore Lovćen and the Njegoš Mausoleum, then stop in Njeguši for pršut and cheese.

⛵ Get on the water
Explore the Bay of Kotor by boat, heading toward Perast and Our Lady of the Rocks. Slow down and enjoy the scenery.

🌅 Chase the sunset
Because of the mountains, the sun can disappear earlier than you expect. Go higher for the best light: Monte 1350, Forza Kuk, Storia di Pietra or Horizont Bar.

🚤 Wake up for Lake Skadar
Our 5 AM boat tour for sunrise was absolutely worth it. We loved the wooden boat for photos, just know it’s slower.

📸 Pavlova Strana
That famous horseshoe-shaped bend is one of Montenegro’s most iconic views.

🍳 Breakfast with a view
At Konoba Ceklin, we had one of our favorite breakfasts overlooking the horseshoe.

🍷 Experience Montenegro’s wine country
We stayed at Eco Resort Cermeniza, surrounded by the wineries of the Lake Skadar region. Wine tasting + local lake fish made for one of our most memorable meals.

🍽️ Explore the food scene
From the magical Stari Mlini to fine dining at Muse and Casarogna, Montenegro surprised us with how much there is beyond the traditional konobas.

🏖️ Slow down by the coast
Spend time around Sveti Stefan, find a beautiful beach, have a long lunch and don’t rush to the next stop.

🚗 Take the scenic roads
The mountain drives are spectacular, but don’t underestimate them. Some roads are winding and challenging.

Our biggest takeaway?

Don’t try to see Montenegro in a rush. Leave room for the slow boat, the long breakfast, the unexpected viewpoint and the meal you didn’t plan for.

That’s when Montenegro really gets good. 🇲🇪
