@sarah.w.b.norden posted something recently and I’ve been mulling over some things they said: “If tricks are words and sequences sentences…Why do we never use repetition in the air? What do we miss when the need to be impressive and unique is the main logic that guides how we create, compose and judge movement?”

In creating the first draft of this recent Aerial Globe piece as research for a short film, I found myself wrestling between the trick/sequence that could impress and the message/narrative the help define the piece. I can’t say I was successful at this negotiation, and I still have a lot feedback to return to development with, but stepping back, I can see some interesting themes and images that I naturally gravitated to, whether intuitively or intentionally. I’m showing some of the repetitions in this video.

Thanks for @thecircusfixto for the performance opportunity, for the video footage @blackaerial.artistry. Thanks to @allyhornsby73 and @isadorabello for the pulling.

P.S. this apparatus design was inspired originally by @saramalaney who is exceptionally talented and expressive. My hope for this apparatus as I develop it further is for it to have colour and shapes on imposed on it, but it’s not there yet. Further more I hope to distinguish it from Sarah’s iteration which should stand alone in ifs beauty and brilliance.

Progress post, 7 months after a total hip replacement...

I had the opportunity to come back to performing and choreography my own hair suspension feature. It was a wonderful challenge to keep me motivated with my rehab and recovery. At the time of this contract, I felt 80% recovered. Some movements became easier and better, while others became stiff and painful. These video clips are examples of "flares" before and after the surgery. Contrary to my assumptions, flares are one the most challenging and still uncomfortable skills to perform. Before the surgery, I could whip my legs up with ease and comfort, but I couldn't climb a hill, pick up heavy groceries or bike without pain and major set backs. Now, I can bike, I really can bike!.. and squat and lunge with weight and without pain, BUT deep leg lifts is still such a humbling task.

Though I have had a performance setback, I am much happier with the life skills I have gained with the surgery than I am sad about losing a circus skill, as tough on the ego as it is.

They say return to full function can take as long as 1 year. I've still got 4 months to work on the remaining 20%.

My company’s name is Trellis Arts. But what is a trellis?
A trellis is a structure that supports the vertical or upward growth of plants. As a movement coach, I am a metaphor for a trellis, here to support you in your movement goals. You are the plant that will grow to higher heights !

And yes I am pleased to say these are som of the plants in my garden.

KNOT POSITION

Hair Suspension Survey Results

Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their experiences. This analysis brings together 208 survey responses, opening possible paths for further research.

In this carousel, we look at usual knot position in relation to hair breakage, scalp inflammation and bald spots reported by respondents.
There is still so much to understand about hair suspension. Building on the knowledge passed down through practice, we have an opportunity to document our experiences, ask more precise questions and deepen our understanding together.

These findings are not absolute rules. They reflect personal experiences and do not show that knot position caused the symptoms reported.

My hope is that they encourage curiosity, thoughtful exploration and care with attention to each person’s limits and support from experienced practitioners.

I’ll be sharing more of these analyses over the coming days.

You can find the survey summary in my bio. In English and Spanish.

On the connection between hypermobility, pilates and my coaching...

My naturally bendy body lacks stability and has difficulty with proprioception. I've had to learn how to train joint stability and alignment to prevent injury, and to treat this training as imperative to my safety and sustainability. In hair suspension you cannot simply hang from your joints without serious risk to injury. You have to possess strength around the whole spine.

My training as a contemporary pilates teacher and practitioner has been my prehab and rehab. It is critical for the health of my hypermobility body in regular life and beyond. It's no surprise that I apply similar pilates approaches to hair suspension coaching to encourage free movement with deep support.

If you are interested in working with me, I offer 1 on 1 online conditioning programs and pilates for aerialists and hair hangers. I also offer two Pilates classes in Peterborough, Canada. Link in bio for details.

In light of recent worries about the strength of wet hair hanging (and concerns around “hydral fatigue”), I wanted to offer a few tips that can support and augment hair strength, even when hair is wet.

The Power of Polar Oils

Most oils sit on the outside of the hair shaft, however, some oils have the unique power of penetrating the hair shaft over time. Why can this help us? Polar oils can occupy some space (and bind with proteins) inside the cortex so that water can’t. This can reduce some of the vulnerability hair when wet.
Ex. Lightly mist liquid coconut oil 30 minutes before wet hair preparation (or even better, the night before!), and finish with a castor oil as a gel, concentrating it close to the convergence of hair by your knot.

Manage Water pH
When using water to prepare our hair, there is potential to disrupt the salt bonds, which can lead to further strength reduction. Hair sits naturally at a more acidic range. Most water we use is hard with minerals and alkaline. Using filtered, distilled or rain water can help lower the pH of our hair to be closer to its natural pH. Using a monthly chelating shampoo and protein treatment can be helpful to restore salt bonds as well (outside of hair hanging).

Allow hair to dry after hair hanging and showering.
While water is a powerful moisturizer for the hair, TOO much water for too long can cause weakness and stress, leading to breakage. Avoid wearing your hair knot for more than 90 minutes. Always let you hair air dry (or blow dry on a cool setting) after hair hanging and showering. This will also prevent unwanted fungal scalp irritations.

I'm such a hair science nerd! Learn more about hair care with me in 1:1 online consults, or join my Intro to Hair Suspension Program. Link in bio xo
