REIGNING CHAMPS!🏆🏐

What a weekend at the @boprugby Zespri International RSE Workers' Sports Festival! A massive congratulations to our men’s volleyball team for taking out the top spot and retaining their title for another year!

A huge shout-out as well to our soccer team, who played with so much heart and gave it everything on the pitch. Both teams put in weeks of hard practice leading up to the event, and we couldn't be prouder of how they represented us.

Thank you to the organisers, managers, helpers, and supporters. It was a great event to cap off the year for many — to all our RSE workers who have headed home or are preparing to leave soon, thank you for all your hard work this year. We hope to see you again soon, safe travels! by @trevelyanspcl

A beautiful morning for a team briefing on Thursday - this month's meeting was facilitated by our Sāmoan and Ni-Van RSE Teams for the first time ever!

Langi did an amazing job as emcee, and a huge thanks to Lenes, Piva, Joepate and Mefi for sharing their stories! To listen to their journeys was incredibly special. by @trevelyanspcl

It's springing, and we're stringing!

Stringing is a kiwifruit orchard management technique that sets the canopy up for the following season’s crop and improves vine structure. It involves training new canes up these string lines seen here!

Why go to the effort? This setup maximises sunlight to the leaves and the following season's buds, improves orchard airflow, and provides a system for easier pruning and canopy management later on. After the kiwifruit harvest season, we'll cut out the old canes in winter, and we'll bring down the new canes to form next season’s canopy.

Shout-out to our very own Jessie Blattmann for this beautiful stringing work! by @trevelyanspcl

Watts going on on site?

We've got 1224 solar panels, ready to be installed on the roofs of Packhouses 2, 3, 4 and the Bin Canopy!

Modelled to cover our base power usage (the power we'll always consume), these panels will generate around 900,000kWh a year or around 6% of our electricity needs.

We've been evaluating solar as an avenue for a long time, so we're excited it's finally here. We'll show what those look like once installed in November! by @trevelyanspcl

We are delighted to congratulate Dr. Jonathan Cutting on receiving the Avocado Award at this year's NZ Avocado Annual General Meeting!

The Avocado Award acknowledges exceptional contributions that have fundamentally advanced the avocado industry, and Jonathan was recognised for his outstanding service through both his scientific expertise and industry leadership over many years.

Jonathan previously served as the Chief Executive of the New Zealand Avocado Growers' Association, representing growers and providing crucial direction as New Zealand's avocado production and international market ambitions grew. Throughout his career, Jonathan has brought profound technical understanding to the industry, and growers continue to benefit from his willingness to share knowledge, drive innovation, and offer support.

We have been incredibly fortunate to have Jonathan as part of the Trevelyan's Team, please join us in congratulating Jonathan and thanking him for his incredible service and lasting contribution to the New Zealand avocado industry! by @trevelyanspcl

Power prices amirite???

Refrigeration accounts for about 85% of our total energy demand in a year, which peaks as we cool and store kiwifruit through autumn and winter.

The challenge and opportunity? National electricity demand also spikes in autumn and winter, which drives up both emissions factors (due to increased fossil fuel usage) and electricity costs!

Our Coolstore and Sustainability Teams worked together to come up with a fantastic solution - Once a coolstore reaches "static load" (where we're just maintaining temperature rather than actively cooling the fruit down) we can temporarily power it down in the evenings, right as the country gets home, turns on their heaters, and cooks dinner!

We use smart sensors to ensure our growers' fruit remains at the right temperature, turning it back on if needed, but the coolstore works like a giant chilly bin, holding it's own cold!

By doing this, our teams have created a win-win-win: we take pressure off the grid, reduce our electricity costs, and cut our emissions.

Do you have an energy-saving hack? We'd love to hear it. by @trevelyanspcl

Count it!

When @toiohomai and @priorityonetga asked whether businesses had a project for the first cohort of a new BOP AI Accelerator programme, we thought the work we do in kiwifruit crop estimation would be a challenging and rewarding problem for the team to get into.

Crop estimation is an important task for us as it informs everything from our workforce planning to packaging requirements, logistics and storage capacity. We have years of crop estimation data and outcomes, so we thought it would be a great fit to see how an AI-powered solution went.

Over 12 weeks, this group of emerging technology professionals sat down with our teams to understand the challenge in full, worked through our data, and built an AI prediction model that delivered some impressive results. We're now looking to further hone the system over another 12 weeks!

Huge congratulations to all participants in the programme for their fine work, and thanks to Seen Ventures, New Zealand Institute of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Social Development, Toi Ohomai and Priority One Western Bay of Plenty for putting the programme together and allowing us to be involved! by @trevelyanspcl
