A brilliant evening last night at The Conduit in London, attending Can Journalism Still Hold Power to Account? with Stephen Sackur and Carole Cadwalladr, hosted by On Front Line.

A fascinating and timely conversation about the courage it takes to investigate powerful interests, the growing threats facing independent journalism, and whether exposing the truth is still enough to bring about accountability.

It was a real pleasure to meet them in person, exchange a few words and leave with a signed book!

A powerful reminder of why fearless, independent journalism matters more than ever.

August was the hottest month globally. Ever.

So why do we insist that people on the frontline in the battle to protect the most efficient, tried and tested system of carbon capture and storage have to go cap in hand to philanthropists to finance their work? It makes no sense.

My paper, ‘Direct funding of indigenous organizations: why the present model of funding must be replaced’, featured now in my October newsletter, asks this question and calls for a fundamental re-think of our relationship with the indigenous peoples who battle every day to protect the rainforests we all rely on for our planet’s climate stability.

The paper was published in International Affairs, the journal of Chatham House, Volume 102, Issue 5, September 2026.

You can read the summary here:

Please note that access to the full article requires an institutional subscription. However, I do have a PDF copy of the article and would be happy to email it to anyone interested. Just get in touch.

🌳 Amazon rainforest protection makes headlines
A Carbon Brief analysis by Orla Dwyer and Josh Gabbatiss suggests that around 20,000 km² of Brazilian Amazon rainforest may have been spared from deforestation since 2022 under Lula’s presidency. The article highlights how political decisions can shape the future of vital ecosystems. 🌎

A powerful screening of Replikka and The Father and the Shaman—two remarkable films connected to the Xingu Indigenous Territory, exploring identity, memory, faith and the resilience of Indigenous communities.
It was a privilege to hear from Yula Rocha, producer of Replikka and part of People’s Palace Projects, and Felipe Tomazelli, co-director of The Father and the Shaman, during the Q&A. Thank you both for sharing your extraordinary work and insights.
Special thanks to Adriana Rouanet for curating such a thoughtful and inspiring programme.
Muito obrigada! 🇧🇷🎬🌿

An important discussion at London Climate Action Week 2026 explored the hidden costs of the global gold trade and the urgent need to tackle illicit gold flows that fuel environmental destruction, corruption, and human rights abuses.
The launch of Civil Society Policy Recommendations on Illicit Gold and the event “Gold’s Dark Web: The Hidden Price of a Booming Market” brought together Indigenous leaders, civil society, policymakers, and financial experts to discuss how governments and markets can strengthen transparency and accountability.
The voices of Indigenous peoples, whose territories are often on the frontline of illegal mining, were central to the conversation, reminding us that protecting forests, rivers, and communities must be part of any solution.
Ending illicit gold trade is not only about financial integrity—it’s about defending biodiversity, Indigenous rights, and climate justice.

Honoured to witness this powerful conversation today during London Climate Action Week 2026. Watatakalu Yawalapiti @watatakalu and fellow Indigenous women leaders from ANMIGA (National Association of Indigenous Ancestral Women Warriors) @anmigaorg brought their voices to the global stage, reminding us that there is no climate justice without Indigenous women.
The panel, “Ancestry in Motion: Indigenous Women Defending Biomes and Life,” highlighted the leadership of Indigenous women in protecting territories, forests, biodiversity, and ancestral knowledge. Discussions also emphasized the need for direct, accessible climate finance for Indigenous communities, support for the Guardians Fund, and strengthening Indigenous women’s political leadership through initiatives such as the Cocar Caucus.
Their message was clear: defending biomes is defending life, and strengthening Indigenous women is strengthening the future of our planet. 🌿

Important conversations on tropical rainforests, climate, and human rights.
At the launch of the Tropical Rainforest Outlook with the Rainforest Foundation Norway, it was inspiring to hear from Torris Jaeger, Christine Halvorsen, and J. P. Davidson on the critical role of protecting the world’s tropical forests.

Equally powerful were discussions at King’s College London and Global South House, including conversations on violence against Indigenous women, Indigenous rights, and community-led solutions. Special thanks to Maria Amalia Souza and Hylton Murray-Philipson for sharing their insights and experience.

Grateful to connect with so many dedicated leaders, advocates, funders, and changemakers working at the intersection of human rights, Indigenous leadership, and rainforest protection.
