🇸🇪 Ironman 70.3 Jönköping race weekend is underway!

Bike and run gear are all checked into transition… eventually! 😅 After forgetting my helmet number, it was a quick dash back to the hotel before everything was finally sorted.

The rest of the day was much more relaxing. I spent some time exploring Jönköping and visited the fascinating Match Museum. It was incredible to learn the history of the factory that made Jönköping famous around the world through the production of safety matches.

Now it’s time to rest, fuel up, and get ready for race day. Bring on Ironman 70.3! 🚴🏊🏃 (race number : 881)

A bit of pre race stress after discovering my rear derailleur hanging off my Trek Speed Concept! 😬

Thankfully, a quick trip to @cykelkraft.se saved the day, they helped source the two perfect screws, got everything sorted, and the bike is race-ready again.

I must be hot stuff as the last hottest day on record was 24 June 1976 ! Today 50 years later another hot day. I’m sure my mum (Myra Ford) drank this stuff. by @triford

Back racing for Team GB 🇬🇧 for the first time since Edinburgh 2012 at the European Age Group Championships in Tarragona.

To be honest, after major spine surgery in December, I wasn’t even sure I’d make it back to a start line this year, so just being there felt like a win.

The sprint race was ridiculously quick from the gun. A non-wetsuit swim (12:53) with what felt like the entire field fighting for the same bit of water! Having Donald Brook in the wave certainly didn’t slow things down either.

I made a costly mistake in T1 trying to be clever with shoes clipped into the bike, missed the key pack and spent the first 10 minutes of the bike chasing hard. Bike 31:54.

The run was the highlight for me. Not quite the pace of a few years ago, but I felt stronger with every kilometre and enjoyed racing all the way to the line. Run 20:37.

Finished 22nd in the Men’s 50-54 Age Group and 10th Brit home. Considering where I was six months ago, I’ll happily take that.

Most importantly, I’ve got the racing bug back. Next stop: trying to qualify for the Olympic distance. 🇬🇧🏊🚴🏃

Today I returned to racing approximately 6 months post surgery of Spine (c6/c7). It’s been a very hard week personally but doing something I love makes me realise that they’re a lot more to life. In a few weeks I race for GB Age Group in Tarragona in the ETU Championship and today’s race at ATW was perfect to get back in the swing of things. Thanks @mreventsatw (missed you today).
