Oligarchs at the helm of tech empires prophesize a coming apocalypse, which they consciously accelerate, and then preach the necessity of preserving digitized human consciousness at the expense of actual human lives. Meanwhile, their dystopian ideals structure supply chains, corporate policy, digital platforms, and our so-called smart devices. How does this biocidal bias constrain not only our capacities in the present, but also our ability to imagine technologies for a future in which human life actually flourishes?

For Technomisoginary, the cultural theorists Sophie Lewis and Kalindi Vora will discuss the ways in which misogyny and colonial ideology shape contemporary technologies, and how we might combat tech leaders’ annihilatory ethos. Can our collective aspirations for care work and supportive technologies extend beyond the horizon of proper compensation and include, as Lewis has written, “living big, dying well, and making things look and feel like love”? Their conversation will be moderated by Rachel Ossip, Triple Canopy’s deputy editor.

Technomisoginary will take place on Saturday, November 14, at 3 p.m.

🤖🗣️ Over the past few years, AI voices have become more and more prominent as narrators of interfaces, news, disinformation, and entertainment. Across characters and contexts, the artists Cooper Jacoby, Maya Man, and Christopher Kulendran Thomas have each trained artificial voices and deployed them as mouthpieces for cultural critique.

For Speaking Without Tongues, the three artists will discuss the practice and implications of using generated voices to mimic, memorialize, or manipulate human speech, and what the resulting work tells us about loss and desire, power and performance, labor and celebrity. Their conversation will be moderated by Mira Dayal, Triple Canopy’s senior editor.

Speaking Without Tongues will take place on Saturday, November 14, at 1 p.m.

“Let’s say live performance art is some kind of canary in the coal mine,” the late artist Pope.L wrote in 2011. He described the institutionalization of “a form that lives and dies on liveness,” asking, “What is its death trying to tell us?”

On Value (2015), a book edited by Triple Canopy and Ralph Lemon, centers on the particular experience—as old as the commercialization and circulation of Black art in the United States—of being valued as a source of entertainment or art, transcendence or truth, while being discounted as a person. Reflecting on the efforts of institutions to collect, codify, and reproduce performance, the book considers the tensions between objects and bodies, presence and permanence.

For Every A-Side Has a B-Side, and in advance of the publication of a second expanded edition in early 2027, we’ve asked the artists, writers, and performers Sol Cabrini, Jonathan Gonzaléz, Nile Harris, Taja Cheek (L’Rain), T. Lax, and yuniya edi kwon to channel the book’s concerns into a variety of performances and readings. Lemon will introduce the event.

Every A-Side Has a B-Side will take place on Friday, November 13, at 8 p.m. The program is presented in collaboration with Roulette.

🚨 From sirens to fire alarms, air raid signals to cell phone alerts, the sounds of emergency are pervasive.

In their visual art and DJing, Jesús Hilario-Reyes takes up the siren as an instrument of seduction and alarm—a call for bodies to move, whether in response to potential danger or to an incoming beat. Benjamin Krusling’s poetry moves between fractured online subjectivities and protean forms of collectivity forged in music, struggle, and ruptures in day-to-day life.

For Hurricane in the Fog Machine, Hilario-Reyes and Krusling will discuss the interplay between far-reaching sounds and mass movement, tech and dread, transmission and transcendence. The conversation will be moderated by Mira Dayal, Triple Canopy’s senior editor.

Hurricane in the Fog Machine will take place on Tuesday, November 10, at 7 p.m. The program is presented in collaboration with Public Records for Durations.

💥 This year’s symposium begins with a conversation on public artwork and how they’re understood by audiences at Public Records.

Participants include the artists Chloë Bass and Jeremy Toussaint-Baptiste, who often work in public: Bass has collaborated with civic agencies to create art for billboards and subway stations, while Toussaint-Baptiste has performed in parks and plazas with a cop car that he transformed into a sound system. Recently, members of the public have intentionally damaged works by both artists.

For Civic Crash Course, they’ll speak about these episodes and consider how artists understand (or misunderstand) the public—and vice versa. They’ll be joined by the art historian and critic Hal Foster, who has written about clashes between the intentions of artists and the experiences of audiences, from attacks on revolutionary monuments to legal wrangling over modernist eyesores. The conversation will be moderated by Alexander Provan, Triple Canopy’s editor.

Civic Crash Course will take place on Monday, November 9, at 7 p.m.

Join Triple Canopy (@triple_canopy) and Electronic Arts Intermix (@electronicartsintermix) on Thursday, November 5, for a conversation–performance between artist and ventriloquist Sophie Becker (@trophysophie) and University of Southern California professor and scholar Sarah Rebecca Kessler (@sarahrebeccakessler).

Ventriloquism, the story goes, emerged in ancient Greece as a form of manipulation, with mistresses of “belly speech” claiming to channel the gods. By the nineteenth century, these false prophets were replaced by a standard stage act: a ventriloquist speaking through a dummy’s lips as part of a magic show, distracting the audience while pulling off a trick. Recently, the art form has seen a resurgence, with a new wave of ventriloquists taking on master-puppet dynamics or speaking the unspeakable (with a dummy channeling the id). The appeal of these old-fashioned acts hinges on uncanniness, as Kessler writes in Out of Sync: Ventriloquism in Popular Media from Vinyl to TikTok (@dukeuniversitypress, 2026), but also on the voice’s vulnerability in the face of new technologies for reproducing, appropriating, and fabricating speech.

On the occasion of Out of Sync’s publication, Kessler will speak about the “age-old embodiment of the disembodied voice” as bridging the history of minstrelsy and “anxieties about media and mediation in the digital era.” Becker, a ventriloquist known for performances with dummies—Jerry and Ronnie—that take on lives of their own, calling Becker’s primacy into question, will join Kessler. In a conversation with Ronnie, Kessler and Becker will reckon with the role of ventriloquism in propping up pseudapostles, inspiring TikTok’s lip-syncers, and ending Milli Vanilli’s career.

The event will include screenings of ventriloquism-related films and videos from Electronic Arts Intermix’s catalogue.

➿ “What makes the time loop both appealing and terrifying is the tempting thought that our own human mind might be the only real thing in the world, our individual experience the only one like it.”

From Groundhog Day to Solvej Balle’s On the Calculation of Volume, time-loop narratives increasingly speak to the sense of alienation and uncertainty that defines much of the present. The protagonists of these stories are usually stuck and alone, doomed to repeat the same day over and over again without escape.

In a new essay, Walker Rutter-Bowman (@wally_butters) investigates how the temporal glitch that removes these characters from a shared reality can make space for new concepts of time and forms of community.

Join Tufts University Art Galleries (@tuftsartgalleries) and Triple Canopy (@triple_canopy) in Boston on Friday*, October 16, for a dialogue between artist and School of the Art Institute of Chicago professor Arnold J. Kemp (@arnoldjosephkemp) and artist and Triple Canopy senior editor Mira Dayal (@miradayal).

Kemp and Dayal will discuss how they work with language in their writing and visual practices, paying particular attention to the materiality, legibility, and production of text. Ahead of Kemp’s series of performances at the galleries, the pair will also consider how Kemp approaches contingencies—the theme of Triple Canopy’s next issue—across his visual art, writing, and performances.

🔗 RSVP now through the link in Triple Canopy and Tufts University Art Galleries’s profile.

Arnold J. Kemp’s exhibition “Not One Thing” is currently on view at Tufts University Art Galleries in Medford, Massachusetts.

In the poet Kim Eon Hee’s writing, the body is in grotesque flux: fluids escape pores, flesh rots, excrement trickles down legs, genitalia twitch. Kim’s approach to feminist aesthetics eschew propriety in favor of the excessive, abject, and taboo through provocative language that is unsettlingly direct. But the poems are also funny: “We can’t possibly be the Creator’s handiwork,” the speaker of one poem muses. “His excrement, maybe—shat out to mark His territory in this desolate universe.”

Bodily and linguistic holes overlap in these poems, newly translated by Soje (@sojeflux), dredging up the banal violences and alienations embedded in language and social hierarchies. In response, the artist Mire Lee (@tinakimgallery, @spruethmagers), who is inspired by and has incorporated Kim’s poetry into her installations, created four new artworks to accompany Kim’s contribution to Not Nothing, our current issue.
