Thinking about doing a triathlon but wondering how on earth you’re going to fit the training around everything else? 🏊‍♀️🚴‍♀️🏃‍♀️

The school runs.
The dentist appointments.
Kids’ clubs.
Work.
The food shop.
Family commitments.
And everything else that seems to fill the week.

We get it.

At TriWOLF, we believe your training should fit around your life not the other way around.

That’s why we create bespoke training plans around your schedule, and adapt them when life inevitably gets in the way.

We’re both husbands, dads and work full-time, so we understand first-hand how difficult it can be to balance training with family life.

Our job is to take away some of the mental load.

You tell us what life looks like. We’ll work out where the training fits.

You’ve got enough to think about already. 🐺

There’s no such thing as a “perfect” triathlon nutrition plan. 🏊‍♀️🚴‍♂️🏃‍♀️

Your nutrition needs to work for you your training load, goals, lifestyle, preferences, and how your body responds to different foods and fluids.

And it’s about so much more than race-day fuelling.

Good nutrition supports:
⚡️ Training performance
🔋 Energy availability
💪 Recovery
🛡️ Health and consistency
🏁 Race-day preparation

The biggest mistake I see is athletes copying what works for someone else and assuming it should work for them too.

Instead, use training as your testing ground. Experiment. Learn. Adjust. Find what your body responds to.

Because the goal isn’t to follow someone else’s nutrition plan.

It’s to build a nutrition strategy that supports you and your goals.

What works for you might look completely different to what works for the athlete next to you and that’s exactly the point.

A coach can help you structure your training, manage your recovery, dial in your pacing and nutrition, and make sure you’re preparing for the demands of race day rather than simply hoping you’re fit enough.

At TriWOLF, we build your training around your life, your goals and your race.

You’ve already invested the money.
You’ve already invested the time.

Now invest in giving yourself the best preparation you can.

🏊‍♀️🚴‍♂️🏃‍♀️ Communication matters.

As an athlete, it’s easy to go quiet when things aren’t going well — but your coach can’t read minds.

If you’re struggling, tired, stressed, injured, lacking motivation, or life is getting in the way, speak up. There’s no judgement.

The more your coach knows, the better they can adapt your training and support you.

You don’t have to have all the answers. Just keep the communication open. 💬

Don’t go quiet. Talk to your coach. Let them support you. 💪

Here are 5 compelling ways a triathlon coach can pay for itself:

1. Train smarter, not longer!

A structured plan helps you avoid junk miles and focus your limited training time on what actually moves your performance forward.

2. Avoid costly mistakes!

Better pacing, fueling, equipment choices, and race strategy can prevent expensive trial-and-error.

3. Reduce the risk of injury!

Progressive training and appropriate recovery can help you stay consistent instead of losing weeks to avoidable setbacks.

4. Get more from your race entry!

If you’ve invested hundreds in an event, travel, accommodation, and gear, coaching can help you arrive prepared to make the most of race day.

5. Save time and mental energy!

Instead of constantly wondering “What should I do today?”, you have a plan, feedback, and someone adjusting it when life gets in the way.

You’re not just paying for workouts, you’re paying to make your training more efficient, avoid expensive mistakes, and arrive at race day prepared.

More training doesn’t automatically make you a better triathlete.

One of the biggest mistakes I see in triathlon is thinking that if 10 hours is good, then 12 must be better… and 15 must be even better.

It doesn’t work like that.

Your body doesn’t get fitter while you’re training. It gets fitter while you recover from training.

If you continually add more volume without enough recovery, you can end up carrying fatigue from one session into the next.

Your easy run becomes harder.
Your intervals lose quality.
Your bike power drops.
Your swimming gets sloppy.
And eventually, you’re doing more training but getting less from it.

The goal isn’t to see how much training you can survive.

The goal is to find the right amount of training that you can consistently absorb and adapt to.

That means having a purpose behind your sessions.

Some sessions build endurance.
Some develop threshold.
Some work on technique.
Some build strength.
And some are deliberately easy to allow you to recover.

And sometimes the best training decision you can make is doing less.

Because being able to train consistently for months is far more valuable than smashing yourself for three weeks and then spending the next two exhausted or injured.

More training is only better if you can recover from it and adapt to it.

Train with a purpose.
Recover properly.
And remember: fitness comes from the adaptation, not simply the workload.

ERG mode or non-ERG mode? 🚴‍♂️

Both have their place but they train slightly different skills.

ERG mode is great for structured intervals and hitting specific power targets without worrying about changing gears.

Non-ERG gives you control over your gearing, cadence and power, making it great for practising pacing and learning how to manage your effort.

For triathlon training, I’d use both.

ERG for precision.
Non-ERG for control.

Because on race day, there’s no trainer controlling the resistance for you. You have to manage the effort yourself.

Which do you prefer ERG or non-ERG? 👇

🚴‍♂️ WHY A BIKE FIT MATTERS

Your bike might be expensive, your training might be on point, and your kit might look the part… but if your position on the bike is wrong, you could be leaving performance on the table.

A proper bike fit can help you:

✅ Ride more comfortably for longer
✅ Improve your pedalling efficiency
✅ Reduce unnecessary stress on your knees, hips, back and neck
✅ Find a more aerodynamic position
✅ Make your position more sustainable for long-distance racing
✅ Potentially help reduce the risk of overuse issues

For triathletes, it’s even more important. You’re not just trying to ride fast, you need to get off the bike in the best possible shape to run.

A few millimetres in saddle height, reach or cleat position can make a huge difference over 90km or 180km.

Don’t just make your bike fit you. Make your bike fit the way you ride. 🚴‍♂️🏊‍♂️🏃‍♂️

The turbo still has its place. It’s brilliant for controlled intervals, bad weather and time-efficient sessions. But don’t neglect being out on the road 🚴 speak to coaches @ironhill83 and @ironman_jayson if you are wanting to improve your cycling for next years triathlon season.

🏃‍♂️ Shrewsbury Half Marathon — 1:30 Pacer 🏃‍♀️

Another fantastic morning at the Shrewsbury Half Marathon, and once again I had the privilege of taking on the 1 hour 30 minute pacing role.

The goal was to cross the line in 1:30 — and we came home in 1:29:36! ⏱️🙌

I’ve been fortunate enough to pace the Shrewsbury Half Marathon for many years now, and I absolutely love this voluntary role. There’s something incredibly rewarding about helping people achieve a goal that they may have been working towards for weeks, months, or even years.

Seeing so many people out there challenging themselves, becoming more active and achieving things they perhaps never thought possible is a brilliant reminder of just how powerful sport and exercise can be. ❤️

As a triathlon coach, I’m passionate about helping people develop not just in triathlon, but across different disciplines and sports. Whether your goal is to improve your running, cycling, swimming, triathlon performance, or simply become fitter and more confident in your chosen activity, I love helping people find a way to progress.

Huge congratulations to everyone who took part today — whatever your time, you crossed that finish line, and that’s something to be proud of. 👏

Thanks to the organisers, volunteers, fellow pacers and everyone who made today such a great event.

1:29:36 ✅
