Now that we can retire from saying “happy new year” for a moment, I am here with a “post”. And then soon it will be the lunar new year of the horse, which makes me think of the dawn horse for whom we played a lilting song in the desert, which makes me think of ancestors of deep time, which makes me feel reflective So much happened over the past year that I am just going to share two core moments of recent memory: 1) is from Banff (Photo by: Abigaile Edwards, Banff Centre 2025), which doesn’t need much elaboration because “iykyk” but also if you don’t it doesn’t matter because Banff alum will be sure to let you know about it and 2) is from @tanksounds, testing the reverb for @susie.ibarra’s CHAN percussion quintet, video by @jakelandau Also— I’m still trudging along with a Substack, only God knows why, but I feel like it allows me a kind of freedom and focus and unselfconsciousness that I don’t have over here on IG. My most recent ramble is a reflection on elemental beings; it’s kooky and I don’t care. Year of the Fire Horse baby Which leads me to my next thought which is that being on here feels less and less enticing. Surely there’s a better way to express my gratitude for getting to play in some truly beautiful and bewildering contexts— a few upcoming gigs include a double drum improv to a live bouncy castle score, making imaginal airline music, and workin on a new WIP by a dancer/choreographer. also I’m working on an album. also putting it out there that I think it would be fun to play in a country band. I suppose the answer is to just keep doing the thing, but in order to keep doing it I have to let you know that I actually really love working in this way and want to keep doing it for as long as life will allow and for that reason I guess I’m here to say: the “books are open” / limbs are feelin nimble 🐎 by @troll.dolly

Selfish me is full of woe and despair but unselfish me is excited to see @wallgrin’s spirit soar and take flight like a whippoorwill and do a big scary new thing like a mighty knight(jar) I have so many wonderful memories performing with @wallgrin over the last three years. Please join us for a very special year-end show, and their last one in Vancouver. This Monday @ The Lido Dec 29 by @troll.dolly

Lost Dog Sundays returns this month with a very special double bill of new duo projects from some of our favourite local artists. NOTICE FLOWER is a collaborative endeavour from prolific multi-instrumentalists Jen Yakamovich and Bahar Khazei, whose combined practices span the fields of improvisation, sound art, field recording, production, composition, bandleading, curation, ecological research and community organizing. RUINED JACKETS is the meeting place of two rising stars in the jazz and improvised music communities, saxophonist/composer Ruthie Ha and trumpeter Jack Lee. At The Hargrove, 150 East 3rd Ave - enter through the alley. Doors at 7:30pm, music at 8pm $15 or pay-what-you-can. All ages. Ticket link forthcoming. Curated tape cassette listening and hang will take place prior to downbeat and following the conclusion of the performances, as well as in the interstitial period. Appropriately, two beloved duo recordings will be featured for this evening: The Giving Shapes' 2023 sophomore release "Earth Rings Like A Bell" and "Strung Out" from Amsterdam's Jasper Stadhouders and Aaron Lumley. LOST DOG SUNDAYS is a monthly music series curated by Cole Schmidt and Kevin Romain taking place on stolen Coast Salish land. Stay tuned for the rest of the 2025/2026 lineup, including a Warm Festive Holiday Event on December 15th.
