Six artists from a field of 28 finalists - and six different ways of exploring what belonging can mean through ceramics.

Forms of Belonging, the sixth edition of Officine Saffi Award, brings together artists selected from more than 1,000 applications across 41 countries and five continents.

Rather than recap every prize, this is the Ceramic Curated edit: six practices worth looking at more closely.

Main Prize winner Andile Dyalvane, who created iThwasa (The One Who is Blossoming) with Nkuthazo Alexis Dyalvane, draws on Xhosa traditions of initiation, connecting bodily form with ancestral knowledge, ritual and community.

Bisila Noha foregrounds materiality and proportion; Cody Hoyt brings drawing and geometry into sculptural form; Phoebe Collings-James approaches belonging through the figure of the heretic; Pan Loong works through repetition and variation; and Trude Westby Nordmark pushes ceramic sculpture towards more open, biomorphic forms.

What connects these six practices is not a shared visual language, but the different ways clay can hold ideas about identity, memory, form and belonging.

Feeling incredibly grateful to be part of "FORMS OF BELONGING" at @officinesaffi in Milan and to experience the opening surrounded by so many inspiring people.Thank you to Officine Saffi for a beautiful day of press previews, meaningful conversations with fellow artists, and such warm hospitality. Sharing a wonderful Italian lunch together in such lovely company was a highlight of the day. I’m both honored and humbled to be part of this inspiring community.

I would also like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Guldagergaard for awarding me this residency prize and selecting me for an artist residency at the center. I am truly grateful for this recognition and for the opportunity.

Officine Saffi Award is an international prize dedicated to contemporary ceramics, established with the aim of supporting artistic research and highlighting the continually evolving role of clay across contemporary art, fine craftsmanship and collectible design. Responding to the open call Forms of Belonging, the works of the finalist artists explored the human need to belong, showing how the material world can become a space for recognition, foster a sense of proximity and help us feel part of a shared human community.

✨️✨️29 September, 6:30 PM — the sixth edition of the Officine Saffi Award @officinesaffi , Forms of Belonging, opens in Milan. ✨️✨️Thrilled to be here for the opening and to present my work, Ecdysis 6.
Belonging emerges as a material condition: the way parts hold together, separate, and reconfigure through cycles of change. The work highlights porcelain’s capacity to register time, touch, and transformation.

I visited China during the Year of the Dragon and became fascinated by the dragon’s presence in art, architecture, and porcelain. In Chinese culture, the dragon symbolizes strength, wisdom, good fortune and resilience.

As an artist, I often feel like a fighting dragon. Constantly pushing forward. This work reflects both the powerful symbolism of the Chinese dragon and my own journey of persistence, determination, and creative survival.Dragons are concealed within the sculpture, waiting to be discovered.
