You are warmly invited to VIRA-LATA, a powerful new performance by Brazilian choreographer Fernando Belfiore.

In Portuguese, vira-lata means “street dog”, the mixed-breed survivors who roam freely through cities, full of spirit and resilience.
Vira-latas carry the beauty of mixture, strength, and adaptability, a celebration of what’s wild, diverse, and uncontained.

After the Social Sculpture Trilogy THE CAVE, THE FOUNTAIN, and THE MARKET, the wild and esteemed Brazilian queer choreographer based in Amsterdam, Fernando Belfiore, returns with a new sensuous mess.

Humorous and provocative, Belfiore starts from the notion of performance as an unfolding of our understanding of the material world and the social relations shaped by class struggle. Offering a visceral critique of consumerism and spectacle, the work alchemically stirs imagination and hope, regurgitating the concept of capitalism as religion.

The Vira-Lata Complex
The piece takes as its points of departure the Vira-Lata Complex, a term first coined by writer Nelson Rodrigues and later expanded by philosopher Marcia Tiburi to describe the inferiority complex of the colonized, their submission in the face of injustice and inequality — and the participatory practices of visual artist Lygia Clark, a seminal figure of the Tropicália movement.

The performance probes questions of obedience, fetishism, and trained domestication, while also devouring revolt itself.
Our guts, nine meters of nerves and memory, become a stage where matter, emotion, and wildness break through.

Join us for this visceral experience, a sensuous, critical, and unruly new work by Fernando Belfiore.

🙏🏽 Thanks to @vogsy_global for trusting in art.

Halloween at COKO Space:
We invite you to enter a Kafkaesque night:
On Thursday 29 October, COKO becomes the territory of Trevoga Collective, an Amsterdam-based choreography label and community of artists who resist convention: dreamers, doomers, and affect aliens drawn towards intensity.

Trevoga, which means anxiety in Bulgarian, creates experimental works that explore the emotional and cultural tensions of our time, moving between choreography, performance, music, fashion, and DIY culture.

We look forward to seeing you.

0000-00-00 doesn’t fear the end of the world, but a world that never quite ends.

Through heavily processed vocals, comfort clothes, soft hexes, and disorienting dramaturgy, 0000-00-00 captures Softrot mid-molt.

Like an insect whose new exoskeleton hasn’t hardened, her world is unstable, suspended between incomplete images, worst-case scenarios and everyday rituals stuck on repeat. Her softness means she can only move wrongly.

Inflected by Trevoga’s fascination with grim aesthetics and algorithmic alienation, the work turns this suspended state into a condition rather than an exception. What happens when the act of becoming hardens into logistical obligation, when transformation ceases to promise renewal and becomes continuous labor instead?

COKO SPACE TURNS ONE!

When we started COKO in September 2025, we hoped it would become a place where people could gather, hang out, discover artists, and celebrate the art of performance.
And looking back at our first year, we feel that this vision is becoming a reality.
Through the COKO Happenings, we’ve connected artists and audiences, given artists a space to create and experiment new work, and given performance art the space and attention it deserves.

We marked our first anniversary with BUST, a powerful work by Anna Riley-Shepard and Maria Pisiou.

Thank you to all the artists, audiences, friends, collaborators, and everyone who has been part of this first year.

Happy birthday, COKO!

COKO SPACE TURNS ONE!

Since opening one year ago, COKO Space has been growing into what we truly hoped it could become: a place to meet, gather and celebrate the art of performance, giving it the space, attention and visibility it deserves.

Through our COKO Happenings, artists and audiences come together, new work takes shape, and performance art is not something on the margins, but at the centre of the conversation.

To mark COKO’s first anniversary, we’ve curated BUST, a tribute to the femme chest as a site of memory, power and resistance.

So come celebrate with us and raise a glass to the next chapter of COKO:

What stories does a chest?
BUST investigates the femme chest as a contested body zone, shaped by history, intimacy, and power. Drawing on punk’s disruptive energy, the work opens a personal, political, and sensorial archive. Two performers move through space, shifting landscapes as explorers in an archaeological site, revealing wild and poetic terrains. Breath, lungs and heart become their compass for navigating and unfold these layered stories.

BUST is a multidisciplinary performance by Anna Riley-Shepard and Maria Pisiou, created in collaboration with punk duo Persobag and visual artist and ceramicist Natalia Manta. The work brings together dance, music and wearable installation, combining practices of bodily archive, raw punk sound, ceramic and metal work.. Together, these elements create a visceral landscape where the chest becomes both intimate territory and a site of political and embodied resistance.

3-7pm (with a break)
cave, Tussen de bogen 79
Sliding scale 10-30€
PM me to register or in case of any problems. Nobody will be return from lack of funds.

“Break your habits” is a movement research class inspired by the pedagogical and practical methodologies of Gonnie Heggen, an educator and mentor at the School for New Dance Development (SNDO) in Amsterdam. The practice seeks to dissolve the perceived disjunction between mind and body by looking into movement patterns and cultivating awareness in the dynamic space between internal sensation and external perception. It emphasizes being fully present in the body while simultaneously observing and composing movement in real-time. The process may involve imitation and critical observation—not only of oneself but of others—as a means to interrogate and expand one’s toolbox and understanding of what dance is, what it can be, and how the body may operate within or beyond known embodied systems.

In this multidisciplinary performance, weaving together song, live looping, movement, and text, Ahmad Mallah and Rebecca Lillich // Krüger invite audiences to witness a eulogy for the future.

Drawing on the Arabic children’s bedtime song Yalla Tnam, immortalised by the iconic Lebanese singer Fairuz, and blending it with grief rituals from the Syrian Revolution, the work unfolds as a moving meditation on care, loss, and remembrance.

Through it, the artists explore their converging and conflicting relationships to heritage, belonging, and displacement, reflecting on the distinct trajectories of their migration experiences and their shared present in the Netherlands.

Shared Bio
Ahmad Mallah & Rebecca Lillich // Krüger are an Amsterdam-based performance duo intersecting the personal and political, performing open symbols to generate reflection, introspection and connection.
Their debut works The Ladder (2023) and The Price of Bricks (2024) utilize singular objects through multiple mediums as action-based performance art happenings.
Their new works, pulling blood from stone (2025) and Yalla Tnam (2026), dive into surrealism and heteronormativity through song, gesture and costume as an evolution of their process.
The duo has performed at Oerol Festival (Terschelling NL), Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam NL),
Sismógraf Festival (Olot ES), and Van Gogh Museum (Amsterdam NL), among others, and
recently presented their first full-length exhibition following a residency at Nieuwe Vide (Haarlem NL).

There is something sacred in the artist’s gift: the power to build a universe from nothing but thought.
In Surfacing HypoKrisia, Laban Trier opened the gates to his surreal playground, inviting our inner children to slip off their shoes and run wild beside him.

Steamy, creepy, funny, frustrating, useless and direct from Berlin:

Losing/Steam
by (love(rocks))
An experimental dance work exploring power, intimacy and resistance

21 May 2026 8pm
@coko.space
Prinsengracht 526
Amsterdam
Tickets: link in bio

About:
Rooted in both history and speculative imagination, Losing/Steam draws attention to how sex workers have long existed within the private spheres of powerful men, spaces where political, economic, and colonial decisions are shaped.

The performance asks: what forms of agency emerge in these intimate encounters, and what might it mean to take that agency seriously?

Through a series of evocative scenes, the performers inhabit surreal and subversive characters: sex workers tending to the historical figure of James Watt, slowly poisoning him through steam baths and delicate acts of care.

Domestic gestures, steaming shirts, preparing medicinal vapors, transform into quiet acts of resistance.

Steam becomes both material and metaphor: a symbol of industrial capitalism’s origins and a force that defies containment, slipping across borders and reshaping environments.

The performance shifts between different moods: steamy, creepy, sometimes funny, and sometimes frustrating or seemingly useless. Movement ranges from controlled, ballet-like precision to moments of disorientation and intoxication.

At once poetic and confrontational, the performance invites audiences into a space where power is reimagined, where the seemingly invisible becomes potent, and where resistance may take unexpected, intimate forms.

(love(rocks)) consists of Row Särkelä-Bassett and Shy Verstraete. Read more: www.coko.amsterdam by @true.roseak
