According to the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center, the average inpatient rehabilitation stay after spinal cord injury in the United States has decreased from 110 days in the 1970s to 37 days since 2015.

Thirty-seven days to learn how to do everything again- in a different way.

It’s not enough to navigate independence, relationships, school, work, and all the other challenges that come with being a teenager.

That’s why we serve teens and young adults from across the country.

Because they need more.

And we’ll keep shouting it from the rooftops.

Through peer mentorship, community experiences, and a week-long residential program, participants build confidence, independence, and lifelong connections.

Nick traveled from North Carolina to join us at the True Grit SCI residential program. Now, he’s heading back to 11th grade- returning to in-person school and taking on what comes next!

Sometimes, seeing what’s possible starts with meeting someone who’s been there, realizing you’re not alone, and imagining a future that once felt out of reach.

Nick’s next chapter is his own, but we’re proud to be part of his journey.

Excited to share that our work with True Grit SCI will be highlighted at the 2026 American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine (ACRM) Annual Conference!

Our symposium, Bridging the Rehab-to-Community Gap: An Interprofessional Implementation Science Approach to Community Programming for Young Adults with SCI, highlights the importance of creating opportunities for young people with spinal cord injuries to continue learning, growing, and navigating adulthood.

True Grit SCI was built on the belief that the transition home is just the beginning. By bringing together clinical care, research, and community-based programming, we’re working to close the gaps that too often exist after discharge.

Meet Anthony!

This is why True Grit exists.

Before we met Anthony, he didn’t know what was next or what his life would look like after his spinal cord injury.

Now? It’s hard to keep up with how full, active, and positive his life is. He’s attending college, working, driving, mentoring others, and continuing to prove that a spinal cord injury doesn’t define what’s possible.

Any room is lucky to have you in it, Anthony.

Maybe not in a typical week.

But when you spend seven days with opportunities to practice skills from morning until night, guided by therapists who specialize in SCI and surrounded by peers who understand your journey, a lot can happen.

Like... enough to leave with the ability, confidence, and belief that independent living is possible, that pursuing education and employment is possible, and that more life is possible.
