My yearly tradition has been to paint my way into the new year, since 2019 🥳

When the clock strikes midnight, I have to have a brush on the canvas 👨🏾‍🎨

In a way, it connects to the Genesis 1 narrative. God was creating on day one. I was made in God’s image therefore I’m creating on the first day of every year as well. 🪞

The personal transformation over the years has been incredible. The skill, the subject matter, my hair 😂 and the lack of vices during my last few new year painting sessions.

I lost my desire to paint in 2023 😔

Nothing felt meaningful, the last meaningful thing I was creating was a painting of my hands, for my daughter’s room. Things didn’t go as planned and I never finished it.

Then in January 2025, I finally felt compelled to paint something meaningful again. From abandoning “My Father’s Hands” to starting over again with this “Grandma’s Hands” painting, I found meaning in this art thing again, even if for an ephemeral moment.

Flying to surprise my grandma with this painting is one of the highlights of my year. I’ve been a lot of places this year and had huge moments. This one stands up to all of them. 🥇

I still don’t really find joy in painting (I never did tbh. I like drawing. I hate painting). But If I never paint again — at least I got this one done 🫶🏾

Took my outfits on a trip to get my spirit some fresh air 👖🌬️

I booked on Thursday. Left on Friday after work. I’m back already. I was home in time for (virtual) church with Liz. But I made the travel count. 🛫🛬

My favorite part of the trip was kneeling in the middle of the path submitting myself to God. 🧎🏾‍♂️

Saturday Morning Cartoons 📺

The excerpt is from a book I wrote and illustrated in 2021, entitled “Questions That Need Answers”, but never edited or published. Maybe I’ll revisit it one day. I probably won’t. It was all about 90s and 00s question-based hip-hop lyrics. Loved the concept 📕

Anyway, here are some pics and videos of my morning watching Spider-Man, and my 2022 show. I’ll stop being a recluse and get back to exhibiting soon enough.

Most of these photos are from my day today. Some from the week. One from January. Another from 2019.

It’s been a week. @houseoftruluck has supported with to-go acai bowls, and tons of soothing tea, and little gingham post-it notes I didn’t even know existed 😂🥹

The context behind these photos is known to me. I don’t need to share. Just know it’s been a doozy of a month.

But today, I got to sit here and listen to God, as my smartTV listened to me. Joke’s on you, Sony, you can’t read my thoughts until I put them on Instagram 😪 …ok it definitely can’t hear the silent prayers.

So as I sat and stared at this painting I began talking to God. And I reminded myself no matter how much I try to conceive God, I can’t. But I can experience Him, with intentional seeking.

Final Exhortations:

Find your moment of silence and tap in. And get really good at knowing which voices are whose.

There’s a reason I go on a silent retreat in the desert yearly 🤲🏾

Sometimes I’m trying to make a masterpiece. Most times I’m just trying to master peace. 🖼️✍🏾🧘🏾‍♂️

“An artist is just a sketchbook with a person attached”-Ms. McDaniel, my high school painting teacher 📒

She believed in me. I came back years later, after college, after being in corporate for a few years. I put some work in the alumni show. She invited me in to talk to her students and proclaimed, “The prodigal son has returned!” It was awesome 🤣

I’m still out here just taking my sketchbook places, sitting in the grass/on a rock and just drawing from life.

This is a reel at the intersection of my childhood practice and my adult resources that take me new places to practice 🙏🏾🤲🏽

Archival footage | My first oil painting—“Still Life” (circa 2003)

I’m not certain where this painting is now. But I do know I gave it to my guidance counselor upon graduation. When things got tough she worked behind the scenes to make sure I had the materials I needed and the dignity I deserved. 🤞🏼(that’s her hand ofc)

Reflections:

I can’t paint fabric like that TODAY 😂 but I do have remnants of my old style, my first style, in my modern paintings. I still paint in shapes and block in my light and shadows. (Insane I’ve been doing this long enough to have different eras of my work 🥹)

I had less colors to work with then but I really liked my ability to make things bold with what I had. I still won’t paint straight out of the tube.

I still paint on aluminum foil palettes. 🎨

I can afford linseed oil now though🌱 No more Crisco 🛢️

Thank you to El Roi (that’s not my guidance counselor’s name btw. It’s a Hebrew name for God meaning “the God who sees me”),

If you’re wondering about my painting process, here it is. I’m cheating. Performance enhancing characters on my shoulder whispering in my ear 👨🏾‍🍳

Ratatouille (Gusteau) taught us anyone can cook. Not sure if anyone can paint. I’ll let you borrow Remy the rat to give you some hints if you want though 😏

Seriously, painting lines on the palm takes a lot of patience and a lot of looking back at the reference photo for accuracy.
