Trunk Show is heartbroken to hear of the passing of our dear friend, the great artist @legitconcerns. Mikey was an absolute treasure, constantly creative, a visionary artist, musician and riffer. We had such a lovely time at his opening in Santa Fe, memorably and sheepishly broken up by a security guard an hour and 57 minutes into our two hour “unsanctioned” event in the parking lot where the Borders used to be. Don’t worry: we joked and sang and noshed the whole time. ♥️ forever to Mikey, his family and friends. We’ll miss you. by @trunkshowtogo

Ox-Bow School of Art for Claire Arctander and Eric May for Trunk Show for Artists Run Chicago

SAUGATUCK, MI: In collaboration with Chicago-based institution, Trunk Show, Ox-Bow School of Art has announced the permanent* installation of two significant artworks by Midwestern artists: Eric May's I Dine Al Trunko and Claire Arctander's for femicultures on the gate of the red Chevy Silverado camp-truck. This is the first time that the School, now in its 110th year, has elected to make a permanent installation of a (public) art work, not too mention a mobile one. These two significant art-works by historical Ox-Bow figures (former Head Chef and current Campus Director) will not only be free and available for viewing by Ox-Bow's on-campus community, but are available to publics in the greater Saugatuck, Douglas, Holland, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and in general the surrounding West Michigan region, thereby serving this larger audience with some critical food for thought as they wait in line at the drive through, tail us at high speeds on the highway, or park their bigger trucks alongside ours at the Lowe's Home Improvement.

I installed my sticker on the southwest corner of Ohio St. and Western Ave.

Did I mention that I'm a terrible photographer? I mean, absolutely, God-awful. Well, once I got upstairs, I realized how bad these are. I'll try to take some more pictures in the morning light.

I felt that this bumper sticker would be too hard to read on my bumper, so I thought it would be preferable to find a place where people can stand close and contemplate. It takes a long time for the light to turn green if you're trying to cross Western at Ohio, and a lot of families cross in heading to or from Smith Park. So, I'm hoping some bored parent will pass the time considering Kelly's sticker and how it converses with the sticker below reading, "HELPING OTHERS HELPS YOURSELF."

Notes: just a few blocks from Trunk Show's home and the original site of Western Pole, outside(r) historians note the appropriateness of the context in the field of, as Chicago artist Erik L. Peterson describes it, "pro bono public art". Kelly was one of the first Western Pole artists and it’s her birthday and Chicago misses her!

What a delight to bring Trunk Show to Fayetteville, AR! It’s actually hard not to gush about it. While I never knew Trunky as it were in Chicago (mostly), it’s a project I’ve long admired and feel a kinship with and to, and it continues to be a forever fave to share with students. @thabkyou once told me that “ephemera is your elvin name.” I have multiple copies of Anne’s sticker, and Aay’s and Jen Delos Reyes’ and Alex Bradley Cohen’s—reminders that I’ve peppered in public/private—at home, in the studio, on the dashboard, and now my actual bumper. It’s the first sticker I’ve ever stuck on my car. LONG LIVE TRUNK SHOW! 💚

Nellie Kluz for Stephanie Barber for Trunk Show for Artists Run Chicago

I finally got Iowa plates! Stephanie Barber's sticker seemed 'Fit' to honor the spirit of rolling, coasting and gathering no moss – listening to Arthur Russell and cruising the dream-fields in a state whose motto is "our liberties we prize and our rights we will
maintain." The location is never permanent, but I remind myself to be perma-into-it.

Also included:

A brief moment of time-taking with Arthur and a little bit from Stephanie’s performance from the first exhibition of this work at the Baltimore Alternative Art Fair in 2014. Each day of the fair a different performer would read a text written by Stephanie in a Stephanie costume. The whole thing is great (and we’re happy to share anew ~ it’s on the website) but of particular delight were the pre-written Answers to (however un/related) Questions. This is the fifth and final answer.

Hope Esser for Edie Fake for Trunk Show for Artists Run Chicago

I picked Edie Fake’s bumper sticker because the message itself is pretty simple and clear but the layout complicates that message. The sticker, presented on its own, reads abstractly. But when tiled together with 2 or more, it reads "In this together"

I put this sticker on my car right before a trip to Starved Rock and on that trip I came across a car that had it’s own Trunk Show. This car had a bumper sticker that said “Human Extinction” placed diagonally across a Bernie sticker. It made the perfect photo op next to my car and a similarly placed sticker, “I’d rather be crying to Enya” (Goodbye Press) also over a Bernie sticker. Shout out to Andy K for being my ride or die sticker consultant.

All this month Trunk Show’s three seasons of artist bumper stickers are finding their way out into the world again, on friends’ cars, galleries and beyond. We are pleased to be included in the Hyde Park Art Center’s Artists Run Chicago exhibition and to extend this work beyond those walls.

Mike Lopez for Jennifer Reeder for Trunk Show for Artists Run Chicago

I put the bumper sticker that says “remember death” on my bathroom mirror to remind me whenever I look at myself that death can happen at any moment. Keeping this in mind motivates me to aspire to punish those that have betrayed me and to keep others within reach under my watchful eyes. It reminds me that today it might be me, but I must try all that I can to make sure it is you. That’s why I like this sticker. It gives me that extra edge that I might need to protect myself and my family from fatal harm. I recommend you find a similar method of always being on guard and prepared for the worst in everything you do because your life might depend on it.

Henry Arias and Katy Loeb for Alexandria Eregbu for Trunk Show for Artist Run Chicago

What we love about Alexandria's sticker is that it speaks to the importance of remembering and displaying joy. Doing so often results in capturing and archiving good memories. She shows this with the pictures she chooses, celebrating Blackness in many forms: family, youth, accomplishment, and communal spiritual gathering.

Recently we've had many discussions at home about how critical it is to show Black/Afro-Latinx joy, especially amongst the gut-wrenching news and the sensations of helplessness and fear that arise.

Whether we review joyous moments from last week or last decade, in viewing photos we often have a somatic experience of that elation. We recall a gamut of sensations, as well as details like what our grandmothers' perfume smelled like, and the ways she cared for us.

We've been doing this recently--savoring old photos of good times like we're trying to conjure spells for the future and heal our grief. It seemed fitting to explore how we experience brilliance, opulence, and gloom. For this Trunk Show exhibition, we built an altar for ourselves of joyful photos from our youth and displayed them al trunko. Also featured: a peach for Katy's southern grandma (photo at right), a platano for all the DR family (photo up top), and fresh flowers from our new home in Seattle.

We chose to take this photo at the edge of Judkins Park. The park sits on Duwamish land. Growing from the 1920s through the 1960s, the surrounding neighborhood became home to most of Seattle's Black community—in large part due to redlining. The area was 73% Black in 1970. It is expected to drop to less than 10% by 2025. This is a site for grieving, but also a beautiful park where--on a non-grey day--families, people, and their dogs can be found enjoying themselves.

Now, we certainly didn't forget the dance party from the opening. We selected MSFB's Love is the Message, because it's a funky groove and it is, in fact, the message.
