A New Future for More Than 1,500 Rescued Monkeys in Laos 🐒 🇱🇦

We’re so close. Help us cross the finish line.

More than 1,500 rescued monkeys in Laos are one step closer to a safer future, with construction of their new care and rehabilitation facilities now more than 60% complete.

Rescued from suspected wildlife trafficking operations, these monkeys urgently need specialised care, protection and a path towards life in their permanent forest sanctuary. 🌿

Led by @lek_chailert and Save Elephant Foundation, alongside the Lao government, this project is working to give these monkeys the safe and secure future they deserve.

Now, we need your help to fund the final critical phase of the sanctuary.

We have $80,000 left to raise, and our wonderful friends at AFAAR are matching all donations up to $40,000! 🤝

$100 becomes $200.
$500 becomes $1,000.
$5,000 becomes $10,000.

$40,000 MATCH. $80,000 GOAL. MORE THAN 1,500 MONKEYS COUNTING ON US.

We’re so close to making this a reality. Help us reach our goal and give these monkeys the sanctuary they desperately need. ❤️

Gluay Hom’s story shocked people around the world when National Geographic documented the heartbreaking conditions he was living in.

Chained inside what can only be described as a barren concrete cell, his suffering was unimaginable.

Following an international outcry and the efforts of @lek_chailert , Gluay Hom was rescued in August 2019 to Elephant Nature Park.

Today, his transformation is a testament to the dedication of Lek and her team at ENP, who gave him the chance to live his best life. ❤️🐘

Lek’s voice for elephants continues to grow across the range countries. Now she’s helping to shape change in Nepal.

Lek has signed an agreement with Nepal’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, working with the Ministry of Forests and Environment, to improve care for elephants living under human care and to better protect wild elephants and their habitats.

Before signing, Lek and her team spent time on the ground in Nepal, visiting elephants, meeting the people who care for them, and listening to the challenges they face.

As Lek says, signing is only the beginning. The real measure is how many elephant lives change for the better.

We’re so proud to stand alongside her and support this work.

Elephants are deeply social, emotionally complex animals who thrive in family groups, led by matriarchs. Sadly, these natural bonds are often denied to them when they’re forced to work in the tourism industry.

At @elephantsanctuary_laos , Kham Suk is finally getting the chance to build meaningful relationships and experience the comfort of companionship with her own kind.

Just look at how she’s been embraced by Ming and Mee. This is a key part of her healing journey.

TangMo loves the water! 🐘💦

There’s something extremely special about watching her settle into the river, letting herself float and simply enjoy the healing energy of the water.

Knowing her past and seeing the life she has today is a powerful reminder of the impact our work can have. And none of it would be possible without you, our amazing elephant-loving community.

Thank you all. 🙏

At @elephantsanctuary_laos , the rescued herd have space to roam, forage and spend time together naturally in a beautiful sanctuary location adjacent to the river.

Trunks Up has recently funded a new viewing platform, giving visitors to the sanctuary the opportunity to quietly observe the herd without entering their space or interrupting their behaviour.

It’s the perfect place to watch the elephants interacting with one another, eating, foraging and simply enjoying their sanctuary home. No performances. No forced interactions. Just elephants being elephants.

Who can imagine themselves sitting here, enjoying the best view of the herd? 🐘🐘🐘

Happy birthday, Lek! 🐘🎂

Today we celebrate our conservation partner, @lek_chailert , and the many decades she has spent protecting animals.

Lek’s work has taken her across the elephant range countries, sharing her expertise to help elephants and the communities working to protect them.

But much of it starts at home, at @elephantnaturepark , where 130 elephants and more than 5,000 other animals rely on the sanctuary every day.

Caring for so many animals is a huge daily job, from food and medicine to vet care, staff, and keeping the sanctuary running.

So for her birthday this year, we’re asking you to help support the care of the animals who have been at the heart of her life’s work.

If you’d like to give Lek a birthday gift, please consider making a donation. Every gift, whatever the amount, makes a real difference.

Happy birthday, Lek. ♥️

RaYa loves her mud spa! 🐘

An elephant’s skin may be thick, but it’s also very sensitive. Mud helps protect their skin from the sun and biting insects, while also helping them stay cool.

RaYa takes her mud baths very seriously. She uses her trunk to spread the mud all over, making sure she doesn’t miss a spot!

Enjoy a little close-up of RaYa enjoying her daily mud spa.

Grandma Lily and SomPond are forging a beautiful bond. ❤️

Lily was rescued thanks to our amazing community, while SomPond’s rescue was made possible by @timothysykes of @karmagawa .

As elephants get older, digestion can become more challenging, so @elephantnaturepark has its very own geriatric kitchen dedicated to caring for its older residents. As you can see in the video, their food is shredded and specially prepared to make it easier to eat and digest.

Both Lily and SomPond are now thriving at ENP, receiving the individualised care they need while having the freedom to build relationships with other elephants naturally.

🐒 A huge step forward for more than 1,500 rescued monkeys in Laos. ♥️🌿

Thanks to the incredible generosity of @jane.garrison & Mark Garrison, we can now fully fund some of the essential infrastructure needed to make their future forest sanctuary possible.

Their support will provide:

💧 Water supplies throughout the sanctuary
🏡 Living quarters for the onsite veterinarians and care teams
🌿 Access routes, allowing staff to easily reach the area to monitor and feed the monkeys

This is a major milestone but we’re not at the finish line yet!

Thanks to the support of Jane & Mark Garrison and AFAAR, a $50,000 MATCH is still in place.

That means every dollar you give can be doubled as we work to complete this sanctuary.
We now need to raise $82,167.30 to make it happen.

♥️ Please donate today and double your impact and help us give these rescued monkeys the second chance they deserve.
