Nestled just below North park, in a very scenic little corner of Balboa Park, lies Morley Field. This plot of land was set aside, envisioned, and named after Park Superintendent, John G Morley in 1914. It would soon become home to the parks major outdoor recreational activities, like tennis, swim, baseball, as well as picnic areas and children’s parks, but it wasn’t until the early 1930’s, during the Great Depression, that San Diego voters approved a $300,000 unemployment relief bond that actually funded the building of the Morley Field Recreational Center we know today. The number of outdoor sports only grew, more activities were welcomed in, and the enthusiasts followed. In the 1950’s, space for an archery target range was created and by 1976, a 333.3-meter banked cycling track was added to the sports complex, bringing track bicycling to people of all ages. In 1978, Disc Golf Hall of Fame member Snapper Pierson established the Morley Field Disc Golf course, and while most courses (both traditional and Disc) featured 18-holes, Morley Field has an extra 19th hole.
