The line that gets me the most is “affection is greater than perfection.” Sometimes people need to hear that the person they love is still going to be human. They are going to let you down sometimes. They will have insecurities and parts of their past that still affect them. They will have areas where they need to grow. And so will you.

That does not mean you should stay in an abusive relationship. It does not mean you should keep accepting hurtful behavior from someone who refuses to change. But I also do not think love has to be perfect to be real.

Sometimes trust has to be rebuilt. One person may need to learn how to communicate better while the other learns how to feel safe again. You may struggle with something that comes naturally to them. There has to be room for that. There also has to be accountability. Giving someone grace means something different when they are actually doing the work to change.

If your relationship has gone through hard seasons, that does not mean it was fake or that you were stupid for loving them. People can look at one painful chapter and think they understand the entire story. But they have not been there for every conversation or seen every quiet change.

Sometimes you still look at that person and feel like it is them. I do not think you should feel ashamed of wanting to repair what you have. What matters is whether both of you are willing to work on it. One person cannot keep carrying that hope for two.

You are allowed to love someone and still need things to change. You can forgive them and still have boundaries. You do not have to pretend the hard parts never happened to believe there could still be something good ahead.

I think there is something worth protecting when two people know they have gotten things wrong and are making a real effort to love each other better.
