In 2023 our own vineyard in Harcourt North was badly impacted by an early autumn hailstorm. On the day we were putting our bird nets on, we could see grey clouds brewing in the distance. Just as we finished netting, these clouds suddenly turned ominously dark, and hail began to fall. We escaped to the safety of the shed, and watched for about ten minutes as pea sized hail fell. The sound in the shed was deafening. We all found ear muffs to wear. Just as quickly as it started, it finished up. The crop was totally decimated. The hail shredded the skins, turning every bunch into a sticky mess. A whole year’s worth of work gone, pipped at the post, only a couple of weeks before it was to be picked.

Enter Gerard and Lucy Kennedy, who came to our rescue, offering us some Shiraz from their higher density planting in Colbinnabin. Gerard and Lucy have established their own vineyard, next to their family’s farm, planting Shiraz on a ridge of greenstone, overlooking the town of Colbo. My cellarhand, Celia, and I ascended the ridge to the vineyard, and realised the quality of the fruit - good enough for the Greek gods. We imagined these grapes on a platter high on Mt Olympus, and the wine cheekily got its name.

It’s been a super mild, and damp, start to the winter. The foraging season is the longest I can ever remember. We have been lucky enough to have been picking a few times with our friends, resulting in a few huge hauls…there’s nothing better than a little bit of a cook up in the forest.

All the fruit is safely in the winery for the year, and the finish line is in sight. We still have a couple press loads to go, and a few ferments to manage, but we’ve just had a second to take a breather and look back at the harvest. It’s been an absolute marathon this year, a long slog, and at some times it feels like we’ve been crawling, and other times sprinting. Having to navigate smoke taint results, losing vineyards, gaining vineyards, along with a challenging growing season has kept us on our toes, and constantly learning. Thank you to Mama and Papa Trutta for always offering to lend a hand, @dickovino for striving for quality and precision in the winery, and @gg_matter for pitching in between jetset work trips. Also, shoutout to all the other helpers, and an honourable mention to @gum.wine for setting up shop just down the road in Harcourt ❤️🍏

Yesterday was a scary day. A fire kicked off a few Ks from the winery just after lunch. Papa Trutta stood down from his local CFA brigade duties and came out to lend a hand. The fire jumped the Calder and burnt straight down towards the owners house, and our winery. Ember attacks kicked off in the garden, and was followed up by an intense bushfire burning the scrub along the property boundary. From the combined efforts of the owners, and a crew of their relatives, the house and winery were defended. CFA trucks were busy trying to defend Harcourt town, and did not turn up.

We were lucky to save the winery, but many in Harcourt have lost the lot. The coolstores, where many farmers and producers store their stock, has been lost. Please spare a thought for those who have lost their livelihood.

It’s an absolutely devastating situation for the community.

In addition, a number of houses have been lost in town too.

Growing season update: it’s been a very mild, and dry, spring. The vines are a couple weeks behind what we normally expect. We had some lovely weather for flowering, with a great fruit set. This warmer weather has finally kicked things into gear, with the vines reaching to the sky. Fingers crossed as we look towards some very hot weather later in the week. taken in Harcourt North by @trutta_wines

Streamside is back! Each year we make this wine the brief is simple. Thirst quenching, chill-able, refreshing light red. Ideally chilled in a high country stream, and enjoyed Streamside. Here’s a few pics from mine and @alistaircotton’s most recent fly fishing trip to the upper Howqua River, in Victoria’s High Country. This is the spiritual homeland of this wine, and often the little happy place we go to mentally during those long days during vintage.
