Tomorrow is the big day!

This week, the artists have been putting together the final pieces on "The Art of Crafting Lives" sculpture! On Monday, Marcus Kiser and Stephen Hayes were here installing signs around the platform base.

Please join us tomorrow, September 24th, at 10:00am as we dedicate the sculpture. The ceremony will be at Wilson Park, on the corner of S. Front and Craven Streets in downtown New Bern. Following the dedication, all are invited to a reception at the North Carolina History Center at 529 S. Front Street.

We look forward to gathering to honor the lives, work, and legacies of the Black artisans who shaped this city. The ceremony will also allow us to thank the artists - Marcus Kiser, Stephen Hayes, and Georgie Nakima - as well as the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, which funded this project. We're also excited to welcome Catherine W. Bishir to town. Bishir's book "Crafting Lives: African American Artisans in New Bern, North Carolina, 1770-1900" inspired the sculpture.

To RSVP for the reception, please visit https://www.tryonpalace.org/.../the-art-of-crafting-lives...

If the ceremony has to be moved inside due to rain, we will update this the morning of (9/24).

See you there!

#DidYouKnow today is the anniversary of the first bricks being laid to build the governor's mansion that would become known today as Tryon Palace?

On March 7, 1768, Governor Tryon wrote to the Earl of Shelburne. In his letter, he wrote, "The first Brick was laid the twenty sixth of August last, and the Body of the House is already carried up to the Plates; in six Weeks I expect to have the Roof on it. Several Persons who have passed through here from the other Colonies, esteem this House the Capital Building on the Continent of North America."

The Stable Office at the reconstructed Tryon Palace is the only part of the original structure that is still standing.

Kinda chic to visit Tryon Palace 💅

Today marks the anniversary of the Eyewitness Sketch of the North Carolina Brigade, which was created on Aug. 25, 1777. This sketch is the earliest known depiction of N.C. state troops and the second known depiction of female camp followers. This sketch is an important part of North Carolina history and is on loan from @amrevmuseum. It is available for the public to view for FREE in the North Carolina History Center.
