Im so grateful for this crew! I’m a horrible coach but I’ve tried hard to create a safe place we can all learn together to be better humans. Their hundred miler was canceled last weekend and they all still stuck to the plan to show up put some miles in and support each other . They came from Florida, Oklahoma, Colorado, Washington and Oregon. We all still connected got together put in a couple solid long runs, @pamspike barbecued burgers for us all, we told stories, game planed about the next race, camped and laughed a lot..I was truly blessed by these humans and I’ll be forever grateful for Team Spike❤️ #ran #friendship #mountains #life #allpartofthedeal by @tspike2

Last week we headed west to Eugene Oregon to support @tspike2 at his inaugural year of Spike Camp. It was an amazing weekend and the event was life changing for me. It was a 12 hour hill repeat on Mt. Pisgah. 3 miles total with about 1000 feet of elevation each lap. To see the Recovery Strong flag at the top of each summit was a dream come true for me. The smiles, the atta boys and the vibe was amazing. If you were there you know what I’m talking about. Thank you Taylor for your friendship and being a pillar in my life and many others! I’m honored to call you a friend and brother. Let’s keep living that life!

I travel a lot for work and at times feel like I miss moments with my son but then I reflect back on the time we do spend together. Spending days in the mountains with nothing to do but talk and take steps opens things up pretty deep. I’m not one to lecture my sons or have deep conversations but I do believe the conversations we have now are much easier because of the days in solitude we have spent together. Taking your kids into the wilderness shows them they need you, it shows them how you react to situations you created , it offers opportunities to process conversations, it gives them opportunities to ask questions and it teaches them resilience. Our youngest will be off into the world alone soon and it terrifies me but I also know he is resilient and a thinker. #kids #smile #life #mountains #self by @tspike2

I’ll never reach an “A goal” it always ends up like plan Z-99. I’ve wanted to run Wasatch 100 for so long and this past September I finally got a chance. I really wanted a sub 24 there but as many things in life I came up short but not disappointed. I showed up solo no crew no pacers just me, myself and I. My only good excuse is living at 300 feet above sea level . I put in the work balanced life like a damn gangster I left nothing in limbo and fulfilled all my obligations. Life was chaos leading up, I had flown to a few different states the week of the race for work, our 17 yo had been home all summer alone and my wife was with her mother during one of the hardest moments she’s experienced. I get pretty caught up in life and tend to blow off some of my biggest achievements mostly because there’s more life to live. I’m selfish and an asshole. But this past weekend I was reminded how hard we all work chasing goals and how most will never understand the effort that goes into running long and we need to celebrate those moments. I watched my team dig deep, I watched my son play in his last regular season high school football game, Pamela and I stayed awake for 36 hours helping runners at a race after only a couple hours of sleep the night before. I’m grateful, I’m exhausted, my heart is full, my tanks empty and I’d want it no other way. Life’s a wild ride ❤️ #life #ultrarunninglife #trails #family #running by @tspike2

Before my first 100 miler my brother told me ..”you better really love running if you want to run a hundred because you’ll be doing it all the time”. I know we say running sucks but I do love it ❤️ #run #dogs #miles #life #grateful by @tspike2

When I hear people say running is the hardest thing they have ever done I immediately become jealous. I’m jealous because I’ve lived through so many things that make even running 300 miles seem easy and I wish it was the most difficult thing I’d done . The physical and emotional pain I’ve experienced in my life from running will never hold a candle to the pain from the loss my family has experienced. Watching my wife sob for months, watching my sons seem completely confused, watching grandparents breaking . Nothing will break you down more than heartbreak. Nothing will make you feel as lost or angry as losing a child. Nothing will make you want to drink more or disappear faster then trying to process that loss. Today we should be celebrating his birthday, today he should have his own family, today he should be finally be at a point he no longer needs us. But instead our hearts are heavy our emotions are high and the hope we have for tomorrow is different. #family #loss #life #running #heartbreak by @tspike2

The part of running races that no one talks about is the aftermath.. Part of the process is the part after your event. You have spent hours, days and months building up for a single moment then it’s gone. Physically, mentally and emotionally you have made decisions towards a single goal. You have adjusted your alarm, you have adjusted your life, you have gone through your day planning around an objective and a single moment . Then at some point of the journey it’s all over, the race is finished the training is done. I see everyone talk about their training, posting about their progress their tips and tricks to gain an edge. Coach’s trying to convince you their approach is the best but nothing about after. In the end running more for 90% of us is the only thing that makes us better runners but how do we navigate life after what keeps us engaged? The part that thinks keeps us really in the game and the part that keeps us excited to do more or be better is how we navigate life after our big day. There’s a real depression, there’s now free time, there’s also often a sense of being lost. After the big day now there’s nothing to post about nothing to share, your dream is now a memory and you feel deflated. It’s normal and a time to catch up on life it’s a time to reflect on your accomplishments or failures it’s time to think about how you felt, time to process the experience, it’s time to set new goals and time to live out new dreams..stay the path keep redefining yourself and keep your head up 🙏 #ran #trails #mountains #smile #goals by @tspike2

Just keep chipping away, everyday counts that and cooler temps. by @tspike2

You know getting sober for me is an interesting one. I also quit wetting the bed at some point. I get the achievement of stopping or quitting something that dramatically affects your life and everyday decisions but we have all done it. We’ve all quit something or have given up on something that we thought made us less of human. I’m definitely not one to hang my hat on my days of sobriety. I don’t count the days or shout them from the rooftops because part of me just feels like I grew up and moved on. I identified a problem in my life, again like wetting the bed and I stopped. For those of you struggling to quit something that you know is destroying you or making you less of a person, just remember you got it in you to change . Sometimes we just got to hunker down, make the decision, look ourselves in the mirror, be honest and roll with it. Sobriety in itself really isn’t the accomplishment but identifying something that you need to change to improve the rest of your life then staying true to it is. The accomplishment is owning your flaws then making changes to your life that improve your wellbeing. #recovery #life #goals #smile #self by @tspike2
