My work moves between different expressions, materials, and feelings.

Sometimes I’m drawn to quiet, simple forms with a delicate, almost silky quality. At other times, I’m inspired by the natural warmth and texture of linen or cotton.

There are also moments when I feel drawn to something completely different—something more energetic and full of movement.

Of course, there is something wonderful about staying with one material or one way of working and exploring it deeply. But for me, moving between very different approaches has its own value. When I step away from one way of working and try something else, I often come back to the first with a different perspective. I can see its qualities from an angle I might not have noticed before, and sometimes I discover something new about myself along the way.

Sometimes, the process feels like an experiment; other times, like a short journey. Either way, these shifts create unexpected connections between different ways of making.

These pieces are part of that ongoing exploration.

From my last firing:

There was a lot of testing this time—new clay, a new glaze, and the same glaze reformulated with different materials to replace one that’s no longer available.

Mixing glaze is still so mysterious to me. I never really know what the result will be. I just have to trust the process and wait until the kiln is opened.

There will never be a point where I can feel completely satisfied or simply settle into this craft. There is always something new to learn, something to figure out, and another path to explore. I just keep walking, even when I fall down or get hurt. Even a step backward still counts as a step.

Maybe that’s what keeps me going.

by @tsuchikara_pottery
