Ballots are out and it's time to vote NO on Prop 421! From the Daily Star: DSA-endorsed Ward 6 Councilmember Miranda Schubert @tucsonschubert says she is voting NO on the TEP franchise agreement. "She said the 25-year time frame is unnecessarily long, and the $2 million per year TEP will put toward climate resiliency is insufficient.

Meanwhile, TEP is spending $1.47 million in company profits (that's money they made from our high rates!) to convince Tucson to take their bad deal. They even paid $14k for "yes" arguments in the election info pamphlet. Say NO to TEP and NO to Prop 421! by @tucson_dsa

Ballots for the November 3 election go out in one week! So, here's why you should vote "NO!" on Proposition 421.

Prop 421 is a bad 25-year franchise agreement with Tucson Electric Power, the for-profit utility that owns our electric grid. A franchise agreement gives TEP use of our public rights-of-way. But Prop 421 is about more than poles and wires: It’s a referendum on how TEP does business in our community.

Tucson DSA has talked to thousands of community members over the last 3 years about their TEP bills. People are struggling. TEP can’t go on with business as usual.

TEP included an anti-public power utility clause in Prop 421. They know Tucsonans are fed up with them profiting off of something we need to survive.

We need to defeat Prop 421 by a huge margin and make it very clear to the Mayor and City Council what we actually want: A public power utility on the ballot.

Four Reasons to vote no on Prop 421:
1. A 25-year franchise deal is way too long
2. It greenwashes TEP while they support data centers & more fossil fuel use
3. It doesn’t address unaffordable rates
4. TEP is spending millions on “yes” ads (hello, red flag!)

If you believe in the power of public goods, vote "NO" on Prop 421. by @tucson_dsa

TEP 🤝 ETP

10 years after Standing Rock, TEP is supporting a fracked gas pipeline being built by Energy Transfer Partners, the notorious company behind the Dakota Access Pipeline.

Why does TEP want more fracked gas? For power for data centers! 🔥🌎🔥

Prop 421 greenwashes TEP and will make it harder to win a public power utility. Vote NO!

Pack City Hall on Tuesday to say NO to Proposition 421 and YES to @tucsonpublicpower! Doors at 5 p.m., Meeting at 5:30 p.m.
***
On August 31, the City of Tucson used public resources to promote TEP’s Franchise Agreement to city employees. The email to city employees directly links to TEP’s website, which expressly advocates for passing Proposition 421. City employees are prohibited from using City resources to engage in political activities.

Passing Proposition 421 would directly benefit the TEP’s investors, approving a 25-year exclusive deal between the City and TEP. By using internal email to communicate only TEP’s position to City employees during business hours the City has put its thumb on the scale to influence the election.

TEP’s franchise agreement does not include any of the community’s terms.
During public meetings held last year, thousands of community members called for a shorter, 5-year agreement and a public utility, along with commitments to renewable energy targets and stronger protections against rate increases. Instead of presenting employees and the public with balanced information, the City amplified TEP’s preferred position.

They assisted a privately-owned utility in their campaign to profit off of Tucsonans.
