This week, we're honored to share Melissa Rayworth's powerful account of narrowly escaping tragedy during her evening commute.

On December 7, 1993, as Christmas approached and worn out from a year of non-stop hustle, Melissa decided to break her routine, skipping her usual train home —the very train a man with a loaded 9-millimeter handgun boarded.

In her essay, Melissa recounts the unexpected twists of that fateful night — reflecting on her partner's decision not to check on her immediately, she candidly shares the lessons she's learned.

❝It took 14 months to convict the gunman on six counts of murder and 19 counts of attempted murder. It took me five years and a myriad of significant and subtle moments being quietly overlooked to realize that I deserved better than a partner who'd stay on the couch on a night like that.❞
