Happy World Turtle Day 💚🐢

@rosslongphoto captures sea turtle hatchlings in the Ningaloo Reef as they make their first journey to the ocean.

From the moment they emerge, predators are waiting both on land and in the water.

Only around 1 in 1,000 will make it to adulthood. taken in Ningaloo Reef by @turtlesnation

The world’s largest sea turtle.

Leatherback turtles can grow over 2 meters long and weigh more than 600 kg, yet they survive almost entirely on jellyfish. Their flexible, rubber-like shell and streamlined body allow them to dive deeper than any other sea turtle, reaching depths of more than 1,000 meters in search of food. by @turtlesnation

Green turtles were once pushed to the edge of extinction by hunting, egg harvesting, and accidental capture in fishing gear.

Today, thanks to decades of conservation measures, legal protections, and community action, their nesting numbers have soared. Beaches that used to see just a few nests are now home to thousands — a powerful reminder of what’s possible when we protect wildlife. by @turtlesnation

As the sun sets, baby sea turtles begin their journey to the ocean, a race for survival that only a few will win.

Moments after hatching, they rely on the light over the water to guide them toward the sea. On their way, they face predators, disorientation from artificial lights, and countless other threats. For every thousand hatchlings, only a handful will reach adulthood.

Ever wondered how a sea turtle begins life?

These photos reveal the development of a leatherback turtle embryo inside the egg — from early cell stages to a tiny hatchling ready to face the ocean.

Leatherbacks can grow over 2 meters long, but every journey starts like this, hidden beneath the sand.

A green turtle tastes a bristle worm before quickly spitting it out.

Juvenile green turtles feed on worms, small crustaceans, aquatic insects, seagrass, and algae. As adults, though, they switch to a strictly herbivorous diet.
