💜 INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD | EVERY GIRL DESERVES A CHANCE TO THRIVE Every girl deserves to learn, dream, discover her strengths, and shape her own future. But celebrating the girl child goes beyond words. It means protecting her rights, keeping her safe, providing access to quality education, developing her skills, and ensuring she has the opportunity to reach her full potential. It also means remembering the girls who are often left out of important conversations, including Deaf and hard-of-hearing girls. Every girl deserves access. Every girl deserves an opportunity. Every girl deserves to be heard. At eDeafy, we believe that a girl’s hearing status should never limit her access to education, technology, skills development, or opportunities to succeed. This International Day of the Girl Child, let’s commit to building a world where all girls can learn, lead, make choices about their futures, and contribute meaningfully to their communities. Let’s protect girls’ rights, challenge the barriers holding them back, and invest in a future where no girl is left behind. When we invest in girls, we invest in stronger, more inclusive communities. Did you know that a team of Deaf girls from Bauchi State won Nigeria’s 2026 National Girls in ICT Competition? 🤟🏽💻🏆 The team, Hands That Speak, from the Special Education Centre, Bauchi State, emerged as the overall national winner with SignCare — a digital health accessibility platform designed to improve communication between Deaf patients and healthcare providers. This is exactly why education and access to technology matter. For Deaf learners, technology is more than computers, apps, and digital skills. It can become a way to communicate, create, solve problems, access opportunities, and participate more fully in the world around them. When a Deaf child is given quality education, accessible learning, and the opportunity to explore technology, we shouldn’t only ask: “What can they learn?” We should also ask: “What can they create?” Because talent is everywhere — but opportunity must be everywhere too. At eDeafy, we believe Deaf learners deserve access to education that helps them discover their abilities, build confidence, and prepare for a future where their ideas can make a difference. 🤟🏽 Learn in Sign. Grow Without Limits. Partner with eDeafy to build a more inclusive digital world. 🤟🏽💻 Let’s create more opportunities for Deaf learners to access education, explore technology, develop their skills, and bring their ideas to life. Because technology should be inclusive for everyone. 👉🏽 Visit eDeafy.com to learn more and get involved. #eDeafy #LearnInSign #DeafEducation #DeafStudents #GirlsInICT by @twigfoundry

Every organisation wants to serve its customers, clients, and employees effectively. But, communication can become a barrier when staff are not equipped to communicate with Deaf people. Deaf people use the same banks, workplaces, schools, businesses, and services as everyone else. Inclusion, therefore, needs to exist within the organisations they already use. That is why Deaf awareness and sign-language communication should be part of staff development. Equipping employees with the right knowledge can improve communication, customer experience, and workplace participation while helping organisations build inclusion into everyday practice. For organisations serious about creating more accessible experiences, staff training is a practical place to start. Visit eDeafy.com to learn more. eDeafy — Learn. Grow. Today marks the last day of September, and as we close out Deaf Awareness Month, let’s take a look at the history of sign language in Nigeria. 🇳🇬🤟🏾 The history of sign language in Nigeria goes back long before the establishment of Deaf schools. Long before formal Deaf education, Deaf communities across Nigeria were already using and developing local forms of signed communication, including signing systems in Hausa-speaking communities. A major step in formal Deaf education came in 1957 with the establishment of the Wesley School for the Deaf in Lagos. Then, in 1960, Deaf educator Andrew Foster, a graduate of Gallaudet University, established a school for Deaf Children in Ibadan. He later established schools in Enugu and Kaduna, helping to expand Deaf education through signing. Foster introduced American Sign Language (ASL) into his educational work, which significantly influenced signing in Nigerian Deaf schools. However, Nigerian Sign Language did not simply remain ASL. Over time, it was shaped by Nigerian Deaf communities, local signing practices, and regional influences. Nigeria also has indigenous and regional sign languages, including Hausa Sign Language (Maganar Hannu), Yoruba Sign Language, and Bura Sign Language. Today, Nigerian Sign Language is an important part of Deaf education and Deaf communities, while advocacy continues for greater recognition, access, and inclusion. The history of sign language in Nigeria is not just about how signing was introduced. It is also about how Deaf Nigerians have used, developed, and carried language and culture forward across generations. As Deaf Awareness Month comes to an end, let’s remember: > Sign language is language. > Sign language is access. > Sign language is culture. > And access creates opportunity. 🤟🏾 eDeafy — Learn in Sign. Did you know? 🇳🇬 A 15-year-old Deaf student in Maiduguri has a clear ambition: she wants to work with computers in the future. UNICEF recently shared the story of Bintu, a student at Yerwa Special Needs School in Maiduguri. Through an inclusive learning programme, she learns alongside other students, with support including sign language. Bintu says she enjoys learning, has a particular interest in computers, and hopes to work with them one day. Her story is a reminder that access to education is not only about being in a classroom. It is about having learning environments, communication and resources that allow students to discover what they are interested in and develop those interests. A Deaf learner can dream about technology. A Deaf learner can learn technology. A Deaf learner can build a future in technology. The question is: are we creating enough accessible opportunities for those dreams to grow? At eDeafy, we believe learning should be accessible. Learn in Sign. Grow Without Limits. With the right access to communication, information, education, and technology, more opportunities can become possible. Whatever you are working toward this week, take it one step at a time. Your progress matters, your voice matters, and your goals are worth pursuing. Start where you are. Keep learning. Keep growing. Keep moving forward. eDeafy — Learn in Sign. Grow Without Limits. Deaf culture is more than visibility. It includes language, identity, community, shared experiences, and ways of connecting with the world. Sign languages are full, natural languages with their own structure and grammar. They are also an important part of Deaf culture and identity. The World Federation of the Deaf emphasises that protecting and promoting sign languages is essential to the linguistic and cultural rights of Deaf people. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities also recognises the importance of respecting and supporting the specific cultural and linguistic identity of persons with disabilities, including sign languages and Deaf culture. That is why inclusion should go beyond simply having Deaf people present. It means creating spaces where Deaf people can communicate in their language, express their perspectives, participate in decisions, access information, and engage fully in society. Making space for Deaf culture means: • Respecting sign language • Listening to Deaf voices • Supporting meaningful participation • Creating accessible communication and information ⁶ • Recognising Deaf culture and identity Inclusion becomes meaningful when Deaf people do not have to leave their language, culture, or identity at the door to participate. Make space. Listen. Include. Respect. eDeafy — Learn in Sign. Grow Without Limits. Inclusion is more than making a service available. It is also about understanding the people who use it and creating opportunities for them to be heard. When organisations make decisions about programmes, services, technology, education, employment, or community initiatives, Deaf people should not be considered only as beneficiaries. Their experiences and perspectives can help shape solutions that are more accessible, relevant, and responsive. Sometimes, the most important step is to ask, listen, and create space for meaningful participation. When people are included in the conversation, organisations have a better opportunity to understand what works, identify what may be missing, and build with the people they are trying to serve. Inclusion should not happen around people. It should happen with them. Listen. Include. Co-create. eDeafy — Learn. Grow. Without Limits. #eDeafy #DeafInclusion #Accessibility #InclusiveBusiness #InclusiveDevelopment DeafCommunity SocialImpact InclusionMatters by @twigfoundry
Technology is becoming part of almost everything we do—from learning and communication to work, business, and everyday life. But having technology around us is not enough. People need the opportunity to learn how to use it. For Deaf learners, access to practical, sign-language-supported technology education can open pathways to skills, confidence, employment, entrepreneurship, and greater independence. That is why accessible digital learning matters. When people can learn technology, they can do more with it and become active participants in the digital world. This is the kind of opportunity eDeafy is building: practical learning designed to remove communication barriers and help Deaf and hard-of-hearing learners learn in sign.
