Only the Pillars Were Immovable- Study of a Monument for the Former Industrial Complex of Călan
Initiated by Alexandra Mocan, Twisted Lullabies seeks to support artistic projects that reflect on Eastern European culture and embrace research rooted in direct, on-site experience.
As part of this journey, a small group of artists—including myself—traveled through Romania’s post-industrial landscapes, visiting towns and communities shaped by the silent aftermath of economic transition. In places once defined by noise, labor, and purpose, we found stillness, absence, and endurance.
These installations are born of that passage—of listening, observing, and remembering.
In the end, when everything else was stripped away, only the pillars stood their ground. taken in Călan by @twisted__lullabies

We have good news!
The exhibition Twisted Lullabies remains open until mid-January 2024 (date TBA)
We won't be able to open the space by appointment as we usually do, but in case there will be significant requests for visiting, we could arrange for some dates when we can hold some guided tours. Soon we will announce the date of the screening for the two films the exhibition presents, so keep an eye on us 👁

See you tonight at the opening of the exhibition Twisted Lullabies at Atelierele Malmaison!

We start the opening with a special screening which will take place at @cazul101

19.00 - 20.02: "Umetnost sećanja"/"Milestones" (2019), a film by Jelena Radenović

"Milestones" is a documentary film about memorial monuments built in former Yugoslavia after World War II. It was the time when art and culture were key vehicles for construction of the new social identity and an educational tool for the community. Decades after the dismay of the last socialist traces in the territory of former Yugoslavia, amazing memorial monuments persist to prove that art can survive ideologies and political systems, always finding new paths to the audience.

20.02 – 21.20: Flotacija, 2023, 1h 17m by Eluned Zoe Aiano & Alesandra Tatić

In Majdanpek, Serbia, a culture historically renowned for magical practices and supernatural creatures is being eaten away by an ever-expanding copper mine. A giver and taker of life, the mine is central to the regional economy but a major threat to traditional practices of the local Vlach population, a minority ethnicity within the Balkans that is often stigmatised and overlooked. The pollution is so critical it's even driving out the dragons said to live in the forests.

These conflicts between nature/tradition and industry/modernity shape the lives of the family of Dragan, a miner by profession and dragon hunter by tradition. His 90-year old father "Grandpa" Pera was a dragon hunting legend whose fame crossed borders, but how is Dragan supposed to continue his legacy when there are no dragons left? In any case, he has more pressing concerns, such as the chronic health problems he's struggling with as a result of decades of inhaling toxic dust. Moreover, his own son Cvele doesn't seem to have any option but to follow him into the mine and keep perpetuating the cycle.
