APRIL BOOKCLUB READ

This is the way the world ends. . .for the last time.

It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world’s sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester.

This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

Yellow wife Reflections
Remember earlier in March I mentioned we @twobookclub were reading yellow wife and I was excited to read it again? I said I was going to share my reflections with you so this is it.

Reading about Pheby Delores Brown, the yellow wife who sacrificed a lot just to live and for her children to live too was heart wrenching. Some of her decisions left me on the edge, afraid for her and the consequences of her actions. This is a historical fiction about slavery with a focus on this half caste as we like to call it Pheby. Who isn’t black enough and not white enough. Stuck in the middle of both worlds. This is the kind of story you read and stop and breathe and read and stop and breathe again. You take it in small bites also in large morsels because you want to know what would happen to Pheby and her son but at the same time you want to stop and breathe because it’s so much. The death of the mum broke me the most because why were people so cruel. And then when I read the authors note and discovered that this is a true life story. Yellow wife is actually the story of someone who lived on this earth before and went through all that, it shifted something in me. I really enjoyed reading this. This book made me pick up house of Eve and no doubt I’m a Sadeqa Johnson stan account because what a storyteller. This book makes me extremely angry about injustice. It also makes me powerless, in front of all that pain and suffering and inhumane treatment. It makes me feel small. I will always recommend Sadeqa Johnson because that woman writes very very important themes that we all need to sit with.

BOOK QUOTE

"In my sorrows, Lord walk with me In my sorrows, Lord walk with me When my heart is aching, Lord walk with me."

"And you have no idea what surviving has cost me.
My bruises might not look like yours but they are there."

"Mama always said that a grateful heart served as a magnet for miracles, so I latched onto the worship and gave thanks. I closed my eyes, rocked forward and back, and let their voices engulf me, heal me, restore me, while I prayed, Jesus lead me. Jesus lead me."

BOOK QUOTES

"Me personally? I want to look back on my life and know I was brave enough to do the things that brought me joy despite the risks, even if they didn’t work out."

"Sometimes the people who are supposed to love you the most are the ones who hurt you the worst. They don’t get a pass just because they’re family. Choose yourself.” I’ve seen the damage holding onto a toxic relationship of any kind can cause and I don’t want that for her."

"Your issues with me are not my problem."

This book is a stark reminder of why I stay away from white books not because the storytelling was bad, on the contrary it was great and the author did great just that I could not relate with some of the characters decisions. Coming from a vastly different background, where community and responsibility is embedded in us I just could not understand William’s decisions. Especially where he left Julia and Alice. I can understand Julia but the reason for leaving Alice was so crazy. There is only a point that we can blame our parents for our fuck ups, William leaving Alice is not one of them. Talk about Sylvia and William, love happens in the most unassuming way I understand but neglecting your sister to cater to the feelings of someone who just abandoned her? I’m sorry but I cannot understand it even if I try. The sisters sitting with Sylvia like they have found a missing daddy in William . Gosh everyone in this book is messed up. As for Alice , the least said about her the better. You get angry and refuse to talk to your mum because she didn’t tell you about someone who clearly said they didn’t want you but you go ahead to look for the person and already want to make up. Children will always disgrace you Walahi and in this life just do you because if you sacrifice for your child thinking next of kin would behave, you can get heart attack later because.
This made an interesting bookclub discussion, we wanted to tear each other on the call🤣 pro William v anti William 🤣🤣🤣. Me I know I can’t relate with all these abroad cultures and life because what do you mean by I’m leaving for my mental health. You are leaving a whole baby , your baby for your mental health. Then why did you bring her into this world. Ha !! Very rubbish somebody.

This goes without saying that I commend @annnapolitano for writing complex and imperfect characters in the way that she did. Situating them in a proper westernized culture while capturing all the nuances. The storytelling flowed effortlessly and I truly enjoyed it even though I wanted to fight the characters. If I felt so much emotion reading this book then it means the author did a great great job.
