The egg and sausage biscuit from the gas station this morning was bad enough that it remained half uneaten. I made up for it with fish and chips from @filostavern in Winchester, TN on the lunch break. The morning session was successful with Joelle and I both getting fish. Only had to wait out one rainstorm today and we fished through it. My feet were numb by noon and my “wading shoes” were full of rocks. The highlight of the day were the brown trout. They may not look like much but after many years of flyfishing I finally got a brown. The kids were hunting creatures less fishy and found a few too. I always want to write something profound to sort of capture the day but you’re better off just getting out there and I wouldn’t do it justice anyway. Sure it’s about flyfishing but I feel like we all learn a little something new about each other every time we go. Joelle is pulling ahead in the fish count by the way. by @twotonepepper

Happy 4th!! We are becoming day trippers I guess. 4am wake up to get to Copperhill TN to get some trouts. We stopped at @hungrymothertn for coffee and breakfast bagels and donuts in Chattanooga to quell the morning beasts. Had about an hour delay on the road waiting for a crash to clear. We were grateful we were safe and there were no injuries according to the park rangers on scene helping keep things orderly. As we pulled up to the river lightning started crashing and I was beginning to think we’d made a long drive for nothing. The storm passed though and we ended up getting a few on the fly. Topped the day off with pizza @communitypie before heading home. In a world of crappy day jobs and stresses these little trips are about connecting…with our family…. Our world….. and ourselves. It’s pretty incredible what happens when you get in the car and drive somewhere. by @twotonepepper

Yesterday we hauled it to the Smokies early in the morning. Made a quick stop at Buccees for breakfast tacos, and stopped off for some necessary advice from Little River Outfitters in Townsend, TN. @littleriveroutfitters was on point with their fly selection and took some extra time to mark up a map and show the newbs where to go. We figured out later reading through online threads that we started a little late in the day. We ate lunch on the side of the road, turkey, salami, apples and cheese during a sunny break in the storms. We fished through several downpours and breathed clean air. Today we had a leisurely coffee and decided to try the Harpeth again. Yesterday’s rain made for tricky conditions and once again @skylervarrick beat me in the numbers of fish caught. This weekend we learned that we don’t know how to fish mountain streams….yet. But we still love it. We learned that even the bass and bluegill like to hide after heavy rain. All I have to show for the weekend is a scale from a foul hooked carp that didn’t even give me the satisfaction of a good look. But I still can’t think of too many better ways to spend a weekend. by @twotonepepper

The thing about fishing….. even when you’re not there…. You’re still there. You’re making leaders or sorting tackle just to give yourself a reason to be near water even if it’s only in your mind. I’m sitting out here thinking about the fact that tomorrow I’ll have been a dad for about 17 years. I’ve learned a lot in that time but still have a lot to learn. We try to get our kids out in the wild whenever we can. They aren’t that interested in fishing or even hiking sometimes. I get it… AC and Nintendo Switch are attractive options. Sometimes when we go we listen to mumbles and groans from the back seat and it’s not always a 100% positive experience. But we keep doing it. Why? Because what I’ve discovered through fishing, hiking, and wandering is a thing I can’t get anywhere else in the world. It’s not on tv and it’s not in a coffee shop or a nice restaurant. It’s a thing you have to go find and although it seems elusive it’s pretty reliable if you simply go to a natural place and spend a little time there. The wind dies down, the light softens, the world seems to exhale and you along with it. My kids aren’t into fishing but there’s always a moment out there when the complaining stops and suddenly we are all just skipping rocks. We are present and paying attention. There’s something out there for them even if they don’t know it yet. Some day they will look back and realize that skipping rocks by a remote stream was one of the best parts of their childhood. I’m far from a perfect dad but if I did a few things right one of those things was forcing our kids to go out there with us. #fathersday #fishing @shaunelliot @joelleflemingpepper @gonetowalmart @adamburrowsmusic @forrestmcilwain Y’all get it. I’m preaching to the choir. Happy Fathers Day!!! by @twotonepepper

You never know where your travels might take you or when you might see some super fishy looking water. So the fly rods live in the back of the car. Always ready. In the bag… fly fishing vests, tippets, leaders, a small back pack and a bunch of bass gear. What’s your bare minimum set up? @tnflyco @flysouthoutfitters @tellico.outfitters @skylervarrick @joelrisen Joel what are you Florida peoples carrying around in your car just in case? by @twotonepepper

You might have noticed I’m a hat guy. This weekend at @tellico_trout_festival I was strongly encouraged to limit my hat purchases. I get it…. Trout Festival and Hat Guy are a potent combination. The temptation was real. @oleboybrand, @tnflyco, @tellico.outfitters were there in force and all had some choice items. But I’m a good husband and limited myself to 2 selections from @theshadytruckers both with the “keep America trucking patch…. One for me and one for Bobby… more on Bobby later. Anyway, guess who turned around and got a TN Fly Co. hat. Ole @skylervarrick apparently needed one to match her clothes that day…sounds like something I’d say. Doesn’t look too bad on me though. Good job babe. by @twotonepepper

Two rivers in two days. The Tellico and the Ocoee. Fish were sighted, fish were caught, fish were discussed and fish were lost. We drove through the mountains and lost sense of time for a few hours. If you ain’t been you oughta. More on the trip later but for now, this trout chomped a fly in front of @waterfrontbarcopperhill on the Ocoee. The little sunfish is swimming freely in the Tellico. Good times. by @twotonepepper

Almost missed it this morning. Got one and the bite died. Talked to a guy on my way back to the car. He asked me if there’s any catfish. I told him, “there’s gotta be.” I guess we are in late spring and the mornings are beautiful right now. Go get em yall. by @twotonepepper
