Seeing myself here now while reflecting back on where I was last August, right before switching to GBV… My training at that time was simply going through the motions, making myself feel small as a woman on the mats. I’d hold in rage and tears while being told I didn’t deserve a space in a school where not enough women train, or that to be a blue belt, I need to be “tough”, to not cry, to keep my mouth shut if I feel uncomfortable. I was a short fuse away from quitting jiu jitsu all together. Brian and I were training locally a couple times a week, quietly looking forward to Sunday when we’d wake up early and drive 33 miles south to feel the power of this other GB community — one that challenged us, one that supported us, one that saw our dreams and made us realize that they are so much more attainable than we’d been taught to believe. There was an unspoken and complicated feeling that we were home. Here we are now, in 2026, part of the movement that is GBV. This year has been a rapid cascade of growth, success, opportunity, and vision for what’s to come. I walk into work everyday, look around, take it all in, and feel in every bone in my body that I made the right choice. I am eternally grateful to call @graciebarraventura home. by @twyla.summers

This meant everything to me. My first win as a blue belt, a silver medal, @bgracejr.33 at my side. 3 lbs over the morning of comp meant an hour of warming up in several layers to shed the water weight, just barely making it before my match. Two days before this I wasn’t even going to compete. I felt so incredibly defeated by the blue belt blues, but I showed up for the little 4 year old girl who has inspired me everyday since meeting her; learning her story of what she’s lost in just a few years of life, yet she radiates joy and positivity and confidence in a way that infects me with hope. I watched her fight and lose with the biggest smile on her face, and I knew I had to confront what I felt was inevitable. I can’t count how many losses I’ve gone through, the tears I’ve shed, how close I’ve been to quitting because I didn’t feel deserving of the time and attention it takes to progress… but the losses are what make us better. They make us stronger, they force us to focus on the minor details, they motivate us, and they humble us beyond measure. Cheers to all the losses, the bronze medals, the people in our corner. May there be many more to learn from❤️❤️❤️ Thank you to my professor @mairfamaral for always believing in me, my team @graciebarraventura , and @bgracejr.33 for more than I will ever be able to put into words. by @twyla.summers

This weekend was a huge learning experience. Camp leading up to my first @ibjjf was challenging on another level, but spent with people who made it fun and competitive. Professor @mairfamaral, Professor @cbelsk and GBTO Professor @joaocizeski … thank you all for your time, attention, and support. The growth you all fostered was remarkable— in both Brian and myself. Thank you to @goldenstateperformancept for your unwavering dedication to keeping us strong and healthy, your presence at @graciebarraventura has changed the game entirely. The results weren’t exactly what we were aiming for, but the progress and training that came from this tournament mean so much more than the hardware around our neck. Brian’s match started off strong. His technique, his retention, and his endurance were unmatched. In the last minute of his fight, an arm bar defense put too much strain on his humerus and with a not-at-all-subtle *crack* and *pop*, his competition days were put on another long hold. The spiral fracture from October was healing well, another break on the same arm means more visits to his Ortho doc, lots of time in PT, and a new level of commitment to recovery. His hard work, discipline, and training regime were inspiring beyond measure. He may not have been able to finish his bracket, but he got the gold in my eyes. Apart from the tournament, and apart from spending 5 hours in the ER (*sigh*), we made a point to enjoy the weekend. We spent the next day in the redwoods with friends, kissing banana slugs, hunting for mushrooms, taking some deep breaths, and reminding ourselves that this is just a small set back in the grand journey that is Jiu Jitsu. Injuries happen in combat sports, losses are inevitable… but with the right people by our side, they only make us stronger.
