American vignette Yes, truck non-op right now. Might have been able to tell by the disconnected drive line laying in the dirt. Mechanics dilemma: 1) replace the bad bearing and the two others most prone to failure without rebuilding the rest of the transmission? Road tripping and backpacking from coast to home with my son for spring break - made possible by an engine transplant in my 40 year old 4runner by my friend Jon. Upon returning I found a few pieces in the kiln that finished firing after we left. It was inspiring and I should do that more often. This was one of the best trips ever. I hardly consumed any media or used my phone for anything but pictures (and to secure an Rx for the poison oak). We slept outside every night except for a few that spent with old and dear friends. Highly rewarding. Besides the price of gas, things on earth seemed to be carrying on and pretty damn beautiful - waves still crashing, flowers blooming, grass growing and trees falling, rocks and abalone shells being tumbled smooth by the tides, and the sun and moon still rising and setting. It's easy for me to find crisis and concern with the outrage found daily in our hyper informed online world- problems unsolved and always expected tomorrow. But after connecting with friends and the earth closely I find so much gratitude in just being part of it all - life. It's a mess, a beautiful mess, and that's what got us here. by @tybrookhart

First day of my last week daily driving @carowockner's taco. Picking up the new and improved 4Runner! Going into the winter I ordered new lower control arms and upper ball joints knowing I had to replace them before I could replace the bald tires. Well, one warm dry day bled into the next all winter and when I finally got to that project two weeks ago during a sunny spring day I thought "maybe I should have just run those tires to dead?" Today I'm happy I didn't do that. 10 inches so far (thank you baby jesus)! by @tybrookhart

When Wilder was 10 months old I took him on his first father son road trip - the stated objective was two fold: 1) get the ol' 4runner from the West Coast to Colorado and 2) see if we could ween him - we know how that went @rabracadabra_ 🙃 I didn't realize how rewarding (and utterly exhausting) 10 days on the road with a toddler would be. Now, we are planning to repeat this trip over spring break. @weedletrainer has been swapping an engine into the truck, along with a bunch of other improvements and this time, we will stop and backpack the Lost Coast, and I won't have to change any diapers 🙏 by @tybrookhart

Hats OFF to this girl! We just experienced a dry run for the apocalypse here in the foothills with winds over 120mph forcing power shutoffs and endless minor emergencies throughout the @fourmilefire district and beyond. From fueling generators in the middle of the night to coordinating staff, trucks, and fixing propane leaks (the pipe wrench and gas tape is still on her floorboard) this woman waltzed through the chaos with the grace of a lioness (which she is). She did fail to make me coffee one morning at 5am. I'm assuming it was because the grinder didn't have power. Forgiven 🥰 by @tybrookhart

Missing a handful of these that still need to be fired, but that's the batch of mountain and reflection mugs to fulfill the fundraiser orders to cover Bullitt's broken leg surgery 🙏 Obviously, there is a bit of variation and I'm struggling with how to allocate them to everyone who ordered/donated. An ode to (Karelian bear) dogs. Before Bullitt there was Sansho. I'm not going to write a novel of crazy stories or try to describe how special it was to call him my best friend, but there's all of that. That bond lead to Bullitt joining the family just three months after Wilder was born. Sansho also brought me several human friends. One of those friends @ak_skygirl owns Kip, Sansho's half brother. They looked and acted almost identical. The last slide is Kip prancing on icebergs in AK. Now, Kip is becoming an old man, something I didn't get to experience with Sansho. But Bullitt is doing great after her surgery two months ago and I hope she turns so gray she looks like a Samoyed. So when Alison asked me to make a "Kip" mug for her I passionately accepted the commission. But every time I started to work on it, I just couldn't. Yesterday, I sat down and did it. When I was done, I started weeping. I still can't put my finger on what those emotions were - grief, joy, gratitude, release - but I can confirm that these wonderful animals have had a profound impact on my life and many others. Holy hell, that road trip delivered: awe; joy; fear (like unable to sleep for days fear); love - lots of love; mistakes; luck masquerading as skill; risk rewarded; lost innocence; earned trust; gratitude, and most importantly for me, self-understanding. Yes, Burning Man was our destination, but it is a journey in and of itself - ephemeral and unexpected - you arrive to a place where people and things are being built and destroyed at roughly equal speeds. The absurdity of unimaginable art cars, lasers, thousands of dusty couches, and 60k people who have all made a pilgrimage they cannot explain were the items we chose to sandwich between 2600 miles of two-lane highway. Our chosen stead for this journey, a notoriously unreliable and lumbering behemoth of a rig, delivered on all fronts. We were comfortable sleeping in storms and never comfortable checking the oil or giving an ETA. At one point, we were saved by a white knight riding in on a Bronco (Ford 1993 I believe), like only a native Nevadan would. From there we were delivered to an oasis, but unaware our next encounter with the chupacabra would test our courage and resolve (and our vehicle's). Upon delivery home my mind returned to the high noon shootout with Federal narco agents at the OK Saloon on the Eastern corner of Black Rock City's 9 o'clock plaza, and I understood, again, "safety is only an illusion." by @tybrookhart

What a week, huh Bullitt?! Bullitt was offered the opportunity to chase some rabbits in a rural back yard, but unlike the thousands of times previously, it was not much fun 🙃 She fractured both bones in her right front leg. Turns out orthopedic surgery is EXPENSIVE. For about 48 hours it was looking like she might lose her leg, but based on what I know about her, Karelian Bear Dogs generally, and the terrain where she lives and works (keeping bears out of yard, trash, vehicles, and house), that would have been worse than death. Putting her down was also being considered. But we got a lot of support and a credit card that wasn't maxed out and got her fixed. On her end, everything seems great. The ledger balance tells a very different story though and so, here I am, offering my first pre-sale (they are SO STRESSFUL) in over a year. We have over $6k in high interest debt to pay, which isn't going to go away easily. So, I'm asking for your business and support. Everything is live now on my website. It's been an absurdly beautiful (and wet) spring here. Just stopping to witness it and be present is a practice that brings me peace and joy. Sometimes I need that, and sometimes I'm just stocking up in case of catastrophe. All taken within a 10 mile radius. Pieces like this are what keeps me coming back into studio. I was cleaning up after a kiln firing and found a leftover stencil I had made to transfer the outline of a drawing from my tablet to a mug and an idea popped into my head. A couple flasks were still in my damp box.
