Drawing from their years of friendship that started at Goldsmiths, University of London, London based Irish artist Laura Ní Fhlaibhín (BRITTA RETTBERG) and New York based Indigenous Californian (Maidu/Modoc) artist Tyler Eash (Nicoletti London) find common concerns and agendas; commonalities in anglo-colonial oppression and a return to Indigenous worldviews. The exhibition is rooted in the politics of their ancestors, a solidarity that has existed between Irish and Native people and their animal, plant, mineral and spirit kin. The alliances interwoven in the artists’ works are acts of agential mourning, remembering and exhuming their ancestral ghosts.

The works "Kadíkim / Rain" and "Kóh’bonom / Storm" depict butterflies emerging from a composition of stretched cowhide, leather, canvas, sheer fabric, broken mirror and beadwork. The titles contain the Maidu words for rain and storm. Here, the butterflies are bringers of rain to a forest fire, as painted in the stretched canvas inset within the abstracted wings. The work was made in response to the devastating “Dixie Fire” that destroyed significant forests in Maidu homelands, after First Peoples were forbidden from accessing and stewarding the land with “good fire” for generations. However, fire can be restorative, it brings renewal and rebirth. It is with the fires of California that the US Government has admitted ignorance over understanding the land, it is after these apocalyptic happenings that land returns have started to become more common. In Eash’s work, intuitively, butterflies have become a symbol of cultural renewal and revitalisation, a symbol of transformation after waking from forced assimilation.

“Nicht Der Kaiser von Kalifornien” is a multimedia interactive assemblage that considers both the erasure and visibility of peoples Indigenous to the “Gold Fields” of California. The historical film “Der Kaiser von Kalifornien” (the king of California) (Luis Trenker, 1936) tells the story of German born Johann August Sutter, who initiated the world’s fastest movement of human migration and the most severe violence in North America due to his discovery of gold in unceded Nisenan Maidu homelands. The film celebrates his legacy, however it erases his impact on Indigenous Californians. The video installation is highlighting the Indigenous California’s fight for visibility after generations of genocide, slavery, assimilation, and currently disenrollment and tribal termination by the government. The audio plays through the exhibition from a lcd screen on the gallery floor that holds three stacks of paper. A pamphlet with photos of the artist’s mother as well as a federally recognised Maidu matriarch, Ina Martin Jackson that are overlaid with a borrowed letter contesting her illegal disenrollment. Visitors are invited to take one of the pamphlets in exchange of signing a letter of solidarity with Indigenous Californians’ call for the return of “Peace Valley”and the renaming of a sacred mountain from “Sutter Buttes” to “Middle Mountain”. With this work, an audience chooses if they can assist a people who are actively being erased.

Mom at the Bear Dance (Maidu New Years)

The thing about reconnecting is eventually you’re reconnected..

Our Maidu matriarch, was stolen away from her family in the mountains as a young girl to be in servitude to a wealthy settler family in the valley. This was typical of the time for Indigenous Californian children, theft and slavery disguised as charity and care and legalised under the Act for the Government and the Protection of Indians 1850-1937. A diaspora of disconnected, reconnecting, and reconnected Natives spreads across the “gold fields” of California as a result of generations of dispossession.

Our Maidu matriarch was trafficked as property through 3 marriages to white settler men. She was listed as “servant” to 3 white men in the 1920s census. Her son who served in the calvary had his land in Alturas stolen for him being “Indian”. He was paid to fist fight for crowds and worked in a lumber mill to keep his family fed. His daughter grew up dirt poor and served as a maid in a motel in Sacramento. Her daughter, maintaining a promise to her Modoc grandmother and Maidu grandfather (to never forget) raised her 3 sons in culture. She taught archery and beadwork and worked the local powwow for 20 years. Her youngest son went to Europe and raised hell about the California Genocide and California’s censored slavery.

Then after dancing for 24hrs about the censored California Genocide in London and after confronting John Sutter’s legacy of child trafficking and slavery in Munich, we found the family we were stolen away from. We found the faces of our relatives in “strangers” up the mountain. We found our valley, we found our people, we found our way back.

We are Mountain Maidu from Taylorsville, California in “Indian Valley”.

These are our homelands, and our homecoming.

We are undying and indestructible.

art can be reserved for truth-telling and collective healing. By expressing the need to protect the
sacred voice, the two envision a route towards a safer arts infrastructure for Native Artists.

"Sànodim / Behind the Fire" is a hand-stitched multimedia painting that uses various Indigenous materials including beadwork, feather-work, and animal horn and hide. The work is layered with found materials such as Burberry buffalo horn toggles and shotgun shells, leathers, and fabrics. Images such as petroglyphs and faces of ancestors are interwoven with a scene of the artists’ river consumed in fire, and all morphed into a counter-clockwise spiral (the direction of earth-worshipping dances). The various media are painted over with oil paint, chrome and colour-flip automotive paint. The work is auto-biographical, referencing Eash’s dual Indigenous Californian and European-Settler identity, where in “Behind the Fire” is a direct translation of the Maidu word “Sànodim”. In this definition, fire is a sacred and ancestral entity capable of bringing forward change and answers to prayers. However, the title plays on the phrase, in reference to always existing behind enemy lines.

I’m deeply grateful for the solidarity and support of @lauranifhlaibhin and Britta and Mira of @rettberggallery with @variousothersmunich . It is in the making of our exhibition, “breaking / briseadh / wa’aidom” and within the depth of our discourse as artists reclaiming Indigeneity whilst speaking to the ongoing harms of occupation, that I arrived at these thoughts that I felt were useful for America and the wider art world.

I’m excited to share more about this exhibition, and how it not only opens hidden histories and revisits pathways of Indigenous solidarities, but also how it serves as a call to action for granting the Peoples of my homeland our religious freedom.
