My grandfather was many things. Husband, father, grandfather, entrepreneur, inventor, explorer, amateur archaeologist, Pan Am pilot, and general adventurer. He forged the archetype I strive to emulate to this day. Of the litany of airplanes he owned and flew over the years, my favorite was his DC-3. He’d long retired from flying by the time I came along, but his stories were legendary. When he passed back in the early aughts, a flight of pelicans flew over in the missing man formation. I’ve had my pelicans for a few years now, but I wanted to memorialize the man in his heyday, as opposed to his passing. As such, N407D is now emblazoned on my arm. My grandfather is flying with me.

Miss you Grandpa. Blue skies up there!

Do I have a spinal cord injury? No.

Am I a firm believer in the healing power of adaptive sports? Hell yes!

Without adaptive sports, specifically those of the action, full contact, you might die, “please sign this waiver” variety, I can honestly say I would not be alive today. They pulled me out of a VERY dark place.

As such, I am a ravenous consumer of all things adaptive action sports media. When I heard @cbreezyrides was on @unexpectedjourneypod, I had to give it a listen. I expected bikes, stoke, all that jazz… What I was not expecting was a mountain of a dude, and someone I greatly admire, talking about some of the very same feelings and struggles I’ve dealt with over the years. Different disabilities, different sport disciplines and skill levels, same struggles. I was moved to write a review on that episode, and consequently received merch from @timjobrown, and @hi5sfoundation. I’d urge anyone, able bodied and disabled alike, that may be going through it, to give the episode a listen. You’re not alone. Check on your strong homies, never be afraid to reach out, be good to each other, and adapt and destroy!🤙🏻

(Thanks guys! I leave for Toronto in three days, and my tropical self starts complaining uncontrollably when the temps drop below 65°F/18°C; this kit will come in handy!)

My great grandfather fought in WWI…. Despite being a Merchant Marine for numerous years preceding the war, the regular Navy, in their infinite wisdom, thought it wise to send him to France as an ambulance driver.

After a particularly bloody conflict, great granddad was headed back to the hospital and happened upon a gravely wounded French soldier. He had extra space in the ambulance, and took pity on the Frenchman, so he loaded him up and took him in for treatment.

The Frenchman survived, and as a token of his gratitude gave my great grandfather this knife, with the caution to never cut himself with it, as the blade had been poisoned. For over 100 years, this knife has been stored in a pickle jar as a precautionary measure.

I am now the custodian of said knife, and jar.

Whether or not the blade was indeed poisoned, or said poison remains potent after a century, I do not know. Nevertheless, I’m incredibly happy to have this weird, lethal heirloom.

It’s staying in the jar👀☠️🔪
