Being raised in St. Rose and attending Destrehan High School are a huge part of who I am today. ❤️💙

It was truly special being able to take my sons back to where so many of my memories were made while attending Destrehan’s 1st Annual Alumni Football Game.

I was blessed to reconnect with some of my old teammates, teachers, and coaches, and to see how much Destrehan High School has grown and been updated over the years, especially inside the school. It was amazing to see the changes, but one thing definitely hasn’t changed: that Destrehan Fighting Wildcat culture! 🐾

If anything, it seems to have gotten even stronger.

Being back on that campus brought back so many great memories and reminded me how much Destrehan will always be a part of me. I’m proud to be a Fighting Wildcat, and even prouder that I got to share a little piece of that experience with my sons.

A very emotional moment for me!
All of the prayers, the sleepless nights, the home and school moves, the financial commitment, the training, the camps, the long car rides, the travel, the practices and all of the personal sacrifices were worth it to help Trey reach his dream and I would do it all over again to see this smile on his face!

God is good!!!!!

It’s been on my to-do list to feature places that show the games AND have exceptional food. @saint_rosecafe is one of those spots! Located on River Road out in Saint Rose. This is one of those holes in the wall with zero frills, but nothing but great flavor.

After trying her chicken, I asked her if she gets a lot of comments on it, and she said this definitely wasn’t the first time she had people blown away 🍗. I need Chef Mo’ at @friedchcknfest 2027 because I genuinely think she would win 🥇.

Next stop on my Louisiana excursion was the small town my family comes from—St. Rose, Louisiana. ❤️

I am beyond proud of my cousin, Tyree Taylor, for opening Saint Rose Café. If you’re anywhere near the area, make this a must-stop on your culinary journey.

I started with the Boudin Egg Rolls… and baby, they did not disappoint! But if you really want to thank me later, order the Oxtail Bowl. Trust me. 🔥

Walking those streets reminded me where it all began. My dad was from St. Rose, and he met my mom at my Uncle Herbert Taylor’s bar, The Circle Bar Inn, where our family gathered every Sunday. My Aunt Anna Mae Taylor owned the neighborhood grocery store, and my cousin Sammy had the sweet shop and pool hall. Looking back, I realize I come from a long line of entrepreneurs—I just didn’t know that’s what it was called back then.

One memory hit me differently on this trip. My Aunt Anna Mae used to tell me after I moved to Chicago, “You have an aunt who lives there. She has a little museum in Chicago.” I had no idea she was talking about my relative, Margaret Taylor Burroughs, the visionary founder of the DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center. What an incredible legacy to be connected to.

Now, seeing Tyree invest back into the same community that gave our family so many beautiful memories makes my heart full. That’s how legacies continue—not just by remembering where you came from, but by pouring back into it.

@saint_rosecafe has been open just under 3 months, and they are bringing soul food, one plate at a time.

They do a great soul bowl that you can get with lots of different proteins, including tender oxtails in either a small or large order. The sides are phenomenal — LOVED Chef Tarren and Ms. Monique’s dressing and candied yams.
.
This is also a bar, likely playing some swing out music with locals kicking back at the tables — the type of place where they likely know everyone by name.
.
Do not skip on the bread pudding and plan a nap for after the meal. They also do a lasagna on Tuesdays, and people say they have the best red beans they’ve ever tried, but I gotta give that a try when I head back.
