Structural Easing
—
I drew this a few weeks ago, and it keeps coming up as relevant in various conversations, so I thought I’d share more broadly. Hopefully this is useful to at least one more person.

The key to this diagram is seeing that the best way to deal with stress isn’t head on, it’s through giving it less space to run wild. —

Here’s how to read it:
—
Silver = Stress, Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt
—
When you’re without structure, the gremlins of the mind run rampant. Not only do they have free reign to attack at any time, they have so much space they can build momentum, which helps them bust through your best efforts at calm. —
Other colors = Stuff you need or want to do
—
When the stress gremlins have free reign, it’s hard to get to the things you need and want to do, even the basics.

It’s only by stepping in and explicitly, intentionally building & reinforcing structures around those key activities that we start to weaken the powers of the gremlins. —

Building structure ain’t easy, but it’s basically just a habit with a time component, and there’s LOTS written about building habits.

The most important thing, I’ve found, is to make the structure you’re building the absolute single MOST IMPORTANT THING IN YOUR DAY (which means you can only really build one piece at a time) — if you can go a few weeks holding to the time and space for that activity, you’ve probably anchored it well enough (and faced enough of your most common challenges) to start building up the next.

The main failures I’ve seen are:

1. Trying to add more than one piece at a time (humility is essential)

2. Finding excuses for other important things to overtake the time/space laid out for the new structure (“But I needed to do X” — you didn’t need it more than you need the new structure, guaranteed)

3. Setting unrealistic expectations for the structure (eg - waking up at 8am every day when you’re currently waking up in the 10-11:30am range) <3 by @tywhite
