🚨ACTION ALERT:

Trump’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is trying to increase fees to $100,000 for international students and scholars using Optional Practical Training (OPT). This discriminatory and xenophobic fee would gut opportunities for international workers and harm US research.

UAW Region 9A members mourn the passing of Dolores Huerta, cofounder of the United Farm Workers and an organizer and movement leader for women, immigrants, the LGBTQ+ community, and the entire working class. Her commitment to growing collective power to confront and overcome injustice strengthened communities and movements across the country.

Dolores Huerta always stood with UAW members across the country. In 2019, she stood with the Harvard Graduate Students Union-UAW, calling on the university to reach an agreement with the newly organized workers. Her solidarity gave hope during the years-long struggle to win Local 5118's first contract—a fight that continues today as HGSU is once again on strike for fair wages, a harassment free workplace, and protections for international workers.

As the United Farm Workers wrote, "The greatest tribute to her life is that her work in organizing will continue." ¡Si se puede! by @uawhighered

To the President of the Harvard Corporation, Alan Garber, Provost John Manning, and the Harvard University Administration:

On behalf of over 4,000 undergraduate and graduate student workers employed by Harvard University and represented by the Harvard Graduate Students Union-UAW Local 5118, we write to demand Harvard University Administration bargain in good faith and settle a fair contract now.

We love our teaching and research. We would rather be mentoring our students than walking a picket line. But our dedication is not permission to exploit us. You have forced us to strike by denying us the conditions we need to do our work:
Safe Workplace: Real recourse against harassment and discrimination, with enforceable protections and access to our union’s grievance process.
Fair Pay and Benefits: Compensation and access to benefits that let us afford to live where we work, in one of the most expensive cities in the country.
The Right to Stay: Enforceable protections and meaningful support for our non-citizen coworkers facing attack after attack from a hostile federal administration.

It is unconscionable to demand our labor while denying us a safe workplace and the means to live. We stand up for our students every day. We must stand up for ourselves, too.

Our labor makes Harvard work. Give us the conditions to keep doing it.

Sincerely,
HGSU-UAW Members by @uawhighered

98.9% YES. 100% UNION POWER!!!

After two years of bargaining, we have overwhelmingly ratified our FIRST CONTRACT! This will be the first graduate employees contract in the history of the state of New Hampshire when it goes into effect!

Higher wages, a $1,000 signing bonus, paid leave, and stronger workplace protections. We fought for it. We won it. Now we all get to benefit together.

Rest assured, our fight doesn’t end with our first contract. Now it’s time to build the union power to enforce our contract and continue standing up for one another!

And to @uofnh Admin like the no-show job nepohusband Michael Sugarman, union turncoat President Chilton, and last but not least, Provost Riley who wears a tracksuit to wayyyy too many formal meetings…we’re still watching and not going anywhere.
And unlike VP Holmes, we don’t need ChatGPT for our messaging either.

To our GEU members: Let’s keep this momentum going.
SOLIDARITY GOT US HERE. SOLIDARITY WILL FOREVER KEEP US STRONG.

🚨 International scholars are under attack, and UAW Higher Education workers are fighting back.

Trump’s Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) is trying to increase fees to $100,000 for international students and scholars using Optional Practical Training (OPT). OPT allows F-1 international scholars to continue working in a similar field for up to three years. This discriminatory and xenophobic fee would reduce work opportunities for international scholars to in the US and would negatively affect US higher education and research.

WE HAVE A TA‼️

Before it goes into effect, it needs to be ratified. Read on to see an overview of what we’ve won and how the ratification process works. by @uawhighered

Recently, we were handed a victory against the Trump administration when a federal judge allowed a lawsuit by UAW, CWA, and AFT to proceed and denied the government’s motion to dismiss. We brought suit against the Departments of State and Homeland Security for using social media to conduct surveillance of online expression. We will continue to fight this policy, which harms our members and their ability to organize. by @uawhighered

Hey President Chilton…you’ve got mail! 📬

The postcards are in her inbox and our message is still clear for @uofnh WE NEED A LIVING RAISE!!

After 2+ YEARS of bargaining, UNH Admin who lay themselves out over their workers are still dragging their feet. They live in paid-for mansions while UNH Grad Workers struggle to make ends meet. So we decided to give them a peek into our lives: Hundreds of postcards. One message. Zero room for UNH Admin excuses.

Now it’s up to us to make sure a fair first contract is signed, sealed, and delivered—stay tuned 👀

Check out September highlights for UAW Higher Education workers. From fighting for research funding and rights for international scholars, to winning new unions and organizing for strong contracts, we are demonstrating the power of collective action. 💪 by @uawhighered

Last week it was reported that Trump is preparing an Executive Order making political appointees responsible for approving all NIH funding. We pushed back and won once, and we’ll do it again if the Order is published.

The Trump administration must stop playing politics with the lifesaving research working class people rely on.

Thousands of UAW members have been fighting for over a year to defend and expand lifesaving research funding – from research on cancer and Parkinson’s, to wildfire and flood resilience, and more – and we’re ready to keep fighting for a scientific research system that serves the working class. by @uawhighered

When We Stand Together…We Win Together, GEU!
We promise we will not stop until we have a fair contract!

And to President Chilton and Provost Riley—All of us are only as good as our word; you said you want to get to a deal soon, then let’s get to a FAIR deal that respects the dignity and immense value UNH Grad Workers bring. We’ll see you soon.
