Statement of Solidarity

“Abide in me as I abide in you.”
—John 15:4

We, Advocates for Peace and Justice at Irvine United Congregational Church, stand in solidarity with student protesters at UCI, CSUF, CSULB, Chapman, UCLA, USC, UC Davis, and across every continent of the world peacefully striving for their universities to disclose investments and divest from the occupation, apartheid, and genocide of Palestinians. It is of paramount importance that students exercise their right to peaceful protest without the threat of violence from law enforcement and intimidation from school administration. We call upon institutions to engage with students in good faith and meet their demands.

As followers of a Palestinian Jew named Jesus of Nazareth, who was a holy troublemaker on behalf of all oppressed peoples, we proudly stand with the students in their struggle for liberation. Our faith tradition teaches us to be in sacred solidarity—“Abide in me as I abide in you.” The truth is that we are bound by the vines of destiny. Our freedoms are intertwined with one another’s. Therefore, our mutual thriving depends on our mutual striving for what is right and just—a ceasefire and a free Palestine.

So help us, God.

This Saturday, we’ll be marching in the Orange County Pride Parade in Santa Ana alongside our sister UCC congregations! We’d love for you to join us for the 11am parade. Help repair bikes, small appliances, clothing, jewelry, sharpen knives, and more while keeping items out of the landfill. No repair experience? No problem! Help with event tasks or shadow an experienced volunteer. Every helping hand makes a difference!
