Recap of the 4th Cyber Stars Competition, where Uganda’s next generation of cybersecurity talent took a step closer to shaping a safer digital future.

Hosted by @ucc_official_ug in partnership with @moict_ug and the National ICT Innovation Hub, the competition brought together over 180 students from 25 universities for hands-on training in ethical hacking, digital forensics, network security and more.

UCC, together with MTN Uganda, Airtel Uganda and URA, yesterday addressed the growing challenge of illegal public Wi-Fi hotspot operators. With over 4,000 unlicensed operators identified, the Commission issued a 7-day ultimatum to cease illegal operations and remove unauthorised equipment. Guidance sessions will begin on 16 October 2026 to support operators seeking to transition to legal operations.

The public is encouraged to use licensed internet service providers for safer, more reliable connectivity.

Yesterday, on @bukeddeonline’s Ekyenkya programme, @hon.nyombithembo unpacked the Commission’s mandate and services, while addressing public questions and misconceptions around communications infrastructure such as masts, performing arts and entertainment, Facebook, and the ongoing conversations surrounding public Wi-Fi hotspots.

He provided a clearer understanding of UCC’s role, what it regulates, and why these issues matter to Uganda’s communications sector.

Uganda joined members of the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation (CTO) in London on 30 September 2026 to celebrate the organisation’s 125th anniversary, bringing together regulators, industry leaders and other stakeholders to reflect on the evolution of telecommunications and the future of digital transformation.

Uganda was represented by a delegation from the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) led by Board Chairperson, Dr. Charity Basaza Mulenga, alongside Board Member Mr. Bernard M. Katureebe, Executive Director Nyombi Thembo and three Directors.

The programme featured a heritage tour tracing the evolution of telecommunications, keynote presentations on emerging technologies and ministerial roundtables that provided an opportunity for member countries to exchange experiences, benchmark approaches and share practical lessons from their digital transformation journeys.

A key highlight for Uganda was the recognition of UCC’s e-Booster programme at the CTO@125 Gala Dinner and Digital Excellence Awards.
Implemented through the Uganda Communications Universal Service and Access Fund (UCUSAF), e-Booster supports locally developed ICT solutions that address challenges in unserved and underserved communities and sectors.

Uganda’s participation at CTO@125 reinforces the importance of partnerships, knowledge exchange and shared learning in advancing inclusive and sustainable digital transformation.
