📣 COVER REVEAL

Mary and Padraic Colum: Lives and the Dream

The first joint biography of Mary and Padraic Colum by Margaret Kelleher @margaret_kelleher12 , the author of The Maamtrasna Murders.

Engagingly written, this book recovers the story of this literary couple whose five-decade life together became a chronicle of the cultural and political foment of early twentieth-century Ireland, James Joyce’s émigré circle in 1930s Paris, and the hotbed of intellectual and literary life of New York from World War I to the 1960s.

It is a story of lives and dreams that deserves to be heard and celebrated.

Marian Keyes and the Politics of Commercial Fiction
by Maria Butler

Marian Keyes is one of Ireland’s most important fiction authors but is often not celebrated as such. Keyes’ novels draw on the author’s trademark charm, wit, and pathos, yet her girly packaging and light-hearted marketing resulted in far too little critical attention and celebration compared to her literary contemporaries.

Focusing on her depiction of three significant Irish loci of shame: addiction, depression, and abortion, Maria Butler draws upon Keyes’ novels, essays, interviews, and online posts to demonstrate how her writings serve as a counterpoint to culturally prevalent, stigmatising depictions of people coping with addiction and mental illness. This groundbreaking study seeks to challenge the existing narrative on Keyes and opens a window to her extraordinary writings for future readers.

In War to the Death! The Waterford Farm Strikes of 1922 and 1923, leading labour historian Emmet O’Connor delves into an intense local movement during a time of constitutional upheaval in Ireland.

Between August 1921 and December 1923 boom yielded to slump and employers struggled to cut wages. Buoyed by four years of steady growth and inspired by revolution at home and abroad, the Irish Trade Union Congress pledged to ‘hold the harvest’ of wage gains.

Two of the biggest conflicts occurred in Waterford, where farm labourers won a headline victory in resisting reductions in 1922. Under the astute leadership of Sir John Keane, and buttressed by the restoration of stable government, the Waterford Farmers’ Association returned to the fray in 1923, determined not only to slash wages, but to smash trade unionism on the land, and put an end to Irish ‘Bolshevism’. The long-suffering labourers were equally resolved to defend their far from generous living standards and had a redoubtable champion in ITGWU organiser James ‘Dongaree’ Baird. What followed was a miniature civil war, with clashes of ‘Red Guards’ and ‘White Guards’.

‘An engaging and essential read for local historians, academics, labour history enthusiasts, and the general reader.’

This is Emmet O’Connor’s 7th book with UCD Press.
