When it comes to emergency management, hands-on experience is critical to learning how to build and lead more resilient communities. It's something Naxi Rodriguez ’25, a student in @spaucf’s Master of Emergency and Crisis Management program, is working on right now through her internship with @ucf.edu’s Emergency Operations Center.

After earning dual degrees last year in sociology and emergency management, the aspiring double Knight knew she wasn’t done exploring all the emergency management field has to offer.

"It's really something that you can apply to any field, any industry, any sector — they all need emergency management. One of the amazing things about this program is the focus on high-impact, hands-on experience.”

This fall, she’s been assisting EOC staff in researching aspects of cybersecurity plans and how other higher-education institutions handle cyber and malware attacks — all insight that could supplement UCF’s current continuity of operations plans. She’ll also gain experience in working an activated EOC during upcoming football gameday operations.

“I'm really looking forward to that hands-on activated EOC experience because I think it'll offer an interesting perspective on emergency management operations in higher education — and especially at a university as large as UCF." UCF teacher Knights 🤝 Making a difference in students' lives

Elementary education alum Lauren Litz ’21 was recently named Teacher of the Year at @scpsinfo's Red Bug Elementary School! Litz credits her experience at UCF with helping shape her into the teacher she is today. 🍎

“UCF played such an important role in helping me begin my career as an educator. It was where I built the foundation of my teaching journey, discovered my passion for education, and gained the knowledge and experiences that prepared me to make a difference in the lives of my students.”

Litz, who has taught at the school for the last five years, says it was an incredible honor to have been selected for this award by her Red Bug family.

“I have learned so much here from all the amazing educators who have challenged me, encouraged me, supported me and helped me grow. This job is more than what happens in the classroom, and I am lucky to be a part of a school community that is so special.” Female teacher stands in a colorful classroom, holding five large balloons and a bouquet of flowers celebrating her as Teacher of The Year. by @ucfccie

From the classroom to international leadership, CCIE alum Abi Ruiz ’16BS ’21MEd ’24EdD's impact on math education is going global. The Triple Knight and former @ocps_official teacher recently became the Executive Director of @mathkindglobal, an international nonprofit advancing mathematics education in communities across Latin America and beyond. It's a transformative role for which she's well-prepared, thanks to her time in the Lockheed Martin/UCF Mathematics and Science Academy and as a Noyce fellow.

"I always want to work for a mission. It’s not about the paycheck — it’s about the impact."

Through Mathkind, Ruiz now leads teams across Ecuador and Guatemala in supporting teachers, empowering girls in STEAM and bringing hands‑on math learning to rural communities. Her dedication highlights the power of UCF’s educator preparation programs to launch graduates into roles that change lives locally and globally. 🌎

"I want to leave a legacy that math can change the world, and if we help students harness it, they can do anything." 📈 abi ruiz, wearing a green shirt and light wash jeans, stands to the left of a colorful sign that reads "bienvenidos a la fiesta de matematicas" by @ucfccie

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: As a second-year student in UCF’s counselor education and supervision doctoral program, Brittany March is soaking up every opportunity she can to serve and learn. She already works as a licensed mental health counselor and serves as both a doctoral student ambassador and co-president of the Counselor Education Doctoral Student Organization.

Now, her extensive involvement in leadership opportunities and networking made possible through the program are also paying off at the national level: March recently became part of the inaugural Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) Doctoral Fellowship Program. As a 2026-27 Continuing Education Fellow, she'll support ACES in developing, assessing and evaluating its continuing education offerings. It's an opportunity packed with professional development and mentorship as she engages with organizational leadership.

“ACES is our flagship organization, and being deeply involved in these opportunities is not only setting me up for leadership but also mentorship. I don't believe we work in isolation, and you cannot grow without other people supporting you. I want to learn and be a part of as much as I can.”

For March, counseling is more than a career: It’s her way of amplifying others’ voices, providing support throughout their struggles, and serving with compassion.

"Every person who walks into our counseling space has a story, and it's our duty to be able to walk with them in that by responding in a way that allows them to live a story that feels authentic.” 🖤💛 Brittany March sits smiling inside the lobby of UCF’s Community Counseling and Research Center. by @ucfccie
