Here at the Culture Lab, we work with UCL academics interested in turning their research ideas into public exhibitions. One such collaboration earlier this year was with Elettra Carbone, Associate Professor in Norwegian Studies at @uclselcs

Using artworks mostly from UCL Art Museum @uclartmuseum as starting points, Elettra curated a small pop-up exhibition on the Power of Language, in which she revealed some surprising insights on how language and culture are linked.

Read more about the display by following the link in our bio: Explore the Power of Language in the Culture Lab.

Image 1: Elettra Carbone.

The inspiration for The Power of Language came from Elettra’s previous exhibition Not Just Words: Learning Languages through Art and Objects (UCL Art Museum, January 2023-September 2024). The exhibition featured 13 short language taster videos, which took artworks from UCL’s Collection as their starting point while encouraging visitors to learn some of the basics in several languages.

Image 2: Map of London by Franz Hogenburg, 1572. (UCL Art Museum, LDUCS-4787[SB2])

Based on the Icelandic video language taster created by Dr Helga Luthersdottir, Elettra paired a birds-eye map of London from 1572 with an extract from Jón Ólafsson’s memoirs, an Icelandic visitor to London in 1615. Coming from a country with no cities, towns, or even villages and seeing London for the first time, Jón lists the places he sailed past, sometimes using Icelandic terms where available and creating new ones where needed.

Image 3: A postcard displaying Panorama of Madrid with plan of Barcelona and map of Cadiz, by Georg Paul Busch, 18th century. (UCL Art Museum, LDUCS-3561)

In a world where AI is increasingly able to produce linguistically advanced translations, the display pointed to the important fact that language is not just words. Elettra invited some of her students to write postcards to friends they met during their year abroad creating connections between the images on the postcards – which represent past traditions of travel to Europe or cultural trends – and their own experiences. by @uclartmuseum
