⭐️ Alumni Spotlight ⭐️

Meet Erica V. DeCasanova, Au.D., CCC-A, CH-AP, an alumna of UConn's Doctorate of Audiology program!

Dr. DeCasanova is currently a pediatric audiologist at Connecticut Children's, where her primary clinical interests include cochlear implants (CIs), early hearing detection and intervention (EHDI), electrophysiologic testing, and clinical precepting. She also has a particular interest in congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) screening and its connection to pediatric hearing loss.

A study conducted by Professor Erika Skoe (PI of the Auditory Brain Research Lab) in collaboration with researchers from UConn Health was recently featured in a UConn Today article! 👏

Their work found elevated levels of prestin, a cochlear protein, in individuals with tinnitus -- a breakthrough they hope will spark larger studies and the development of new treatments. 👂🔍

Our second year MA-SLP students began AAC Awareness Month with hands-on learning in their AAC class with Smartbox. Today, they had the opportunity to explore a variety of AAC devices and programs, gaining valuable experience with the tools that are so important for fostering effective communication.

As future speech-language pathologists, our students are developing the knowledge and skills needed to support individuals across the lifespan with complex communication needs and promote access to communication for all.💙🗣️ by @uconn_slhs

𝗦𝗟𝗛𝗦 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘂𝗺

Former NBA player Michael Kidd-Gilchrist will be visiting on October 5th to speak about his experiences as a person who stutters, his work with clinicians throughout the years, and his advocacy. As the founder of Change & Impact, a nonprofit working to expand access to speech therapy services for people who stutter, Kidd-Gilchrist's advocacy has aided the passage of speech therapy coverage laws in several states. The Kidd's Stuttering Act has also been introduced in Congress in his name.

The SLHS Department looks forward to this enlightening presentation and invites members of the SLHS community to attend!
